What do I do (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

My fireplace is actually an insert in a brick chimney. The house was built in 1979. I really want to get glass doors this year. (My SO and I have been discussing this for the last 22 years and I have lost the arguments. This year I won).
I don't have a clue what to do. Do I hire someone, do I just go to Home Depot and buy what I think fits, do I find a specialized fireplace company, etc.? I have had trouble finding a specialist, it seems they all want to convert my fireplace to gas.

We have glass doors on the fireplace of our PA house. My parents put them in many years ago so I'm not sure who did it. We temporaily let some people lease the house before we bought it from DM and someone broke one. It was relatively easy to fix it - our chimney sweep did it for us.
If you have a chimney sweep you might as them for a recommendation.

Go to a fireplace ,stove store. thare should be some around your area. They would know what would work good. Plus having the make of the inseart helps. Sometimes a standard heat temp glass doors are at menards homedept or other places.

Measure the opening. Go to Lowes. They will arrange delivery as well as the installation.

Thank you everyone!!!
At last, I can have a fire in the fireplace and not bemoan the fact that I am letting all the cold air in.
I suppose it would be a good idea to have a chimney sweep come and clean the fire place anyway.

It's super easy....definitely not rocket science. Bought mine at Lowe's installed myself. Did have to get Lowe's to load them in the car. No problem.

Didn't your chimney ever develop mold from non use?
Also, I don't know anything about fireplaces, but do you build a fire and then close the glass doors while it's burning? How does the heat get out into the room? Sorry for being so ignorant about these things.

I have always had a couple of fires during the winter. (I think).
No problems with mold. I imagine when you have a fire, you probably burn any mold away.
Yep, you build your fire and close the glass doors. It's suppose help so you do not "steal" heat from the rest of your house. But I will the glass doors open when I have my fire. LOL.
When you want to leave, you close the doors. The warm in your house won't go up the chimney that way. It's like a "window" in your house.

I think you should discuss your theories with your local fire department.
