I have traced my first (vintage) pattern onto red-dot tracing paper. I placed the red-dot down on the table first, then the tracing paper facing down towards the table, then the original pattern piece face down.

Now that the newly-traced pieces are reversed (e.g. the notches are on the opposite side of the piece), do I need to cut the pieces upside down (to restore them to their original orientation)?

Did I do this incorrectly? Should I have traced with the original pieces face-up?

I think it depends. If the pattern piece is part of a symetrical part of the garment it doesn't matter. You will be cutting two pieces, a left and right If it isn't (ie it's a left part and there is a different right part) then your garment will be the reverse of what it is "supposed" to be unless you lay them out upside down OR lay them on the on the wrong side of the fabric. The trick is to be consistant if your are working with an asymetrical style. If you lay them upside down, then make sure you do this for all of them. I hope this makes sense. geometry is hard to explain in words.

A pattern piece that is "cut 2" will not be affected by tracing the opposite side. A pattern piece that is cut 1 (not on fold) like an assymetrical detail would have to be traced as original. If you have a piece that you have traced upside down, as it were, you can mark it clearly in bold "face down" and place the pattern piece on top of the cloth with the face of the cloth towards the table.
No need to re-trace if you can follow this face up/face down marking.
