how to repair v-shaped tear in hubby's leather jacket (Moderated by EleanorSews)
Posted on: 1/21/15 8:44 PM ET
My husband tore his black leather jacket when outside late one night trying to thaw out our frozen pipes. It's right in front, on the upper right side of the jacket. He wants me to simply use fabric glue and glue it together by inserting a piece of scrap fabric behind the tear. Anyone have suggestions? Should I try this myself or go to an alterations shop that might do leather work? Thanks, Jeanie in SC

You can get a leather repair kit. Automotive supply stores usually have them for fixing leather car seats.

I did a repair like that once. I took some tape that came off lightly like blue tape from menards. closely closed the tear. taped it.
Did the clear glue for leather. Once that dried put a mesh Stabilizer on. It should be the iron on stuff. You can find it at any sewing dealer shops. That is where i bought mine. Remove the blue tape from the front carefully . You will see the tear but it will be less visible. This is how i did mine.

Go biker. Find a great patch and sew it on like you meant it to be there all the time.
'Course, if this is a business jacket kind of jacket, he might get looked at askance if he sashays into the boardroom with a Dead Head or Ride to Live patch on his chest.

It's just fabric; we can out-think it.

When my bike jacket ended up with a hole/rip in the shoulder (due to sliding along the tarmac for a while), the leather repair place took the sleeve out and stitched a new piece of leather over the sleeve cap. It's nicely shaped so that it actually looks like it's meant to be there.
Of course it all depends on exactly where it is and what kind of jacket it is as to how this would blend in.

I did the tape/glue explained above and it worked fine - no one has noticed.

The tape/glue repair is what I use, and I always use contact cement. It is pliable, clear, and does not dry out.
That is what the leather shops use.

If it can be done with a needle and thread, I can do it!

Arrow Leather is a great place that repairs, refinishes and cleans leather. They will send you a box to send the item in and then send it back to you when it is finished.
My green leather jacket got caught in the tailgate of an SUV and had a hole punched in the front shoulder. I talked to them and sent ideas for a triangular patch to cover the hole. They made the repairs, tinted to leather to match and it looks perfect. Arrow-care.com

Great suggestions above for making an inconspicuous repair. Another possibility is to get heavy thread and do a Frankenstein's Monster stitching job on it, so that it's repaired, but really really obvious. Naturally this would not be for a dressy "nice" jacket, but might work on a very casual or biker jacket.
