the 9 hook requires a different oil than sew machine oil (Moderated by Sharon1952, EleanorSews)

I found out that the oil in the Bernina oil dispenser that you get with the 9 hook in the 7 series is not regular sewing machine oil. Regular sewing machine oil is too viscous. The stuff in the dispenser you get is Moblie Velocite #6. It is "thinner" or of less viscosity. I learned this from my dealer/tech.
He offers to fill up a dispenser with the stuff for a couple of dollars.
He said the dispenser we get lasts for a while.
You can get it on Amazon or eBay in pint or quart but it costs about $25 including shipping for a pint. That might last several lifetimes!
Maybe I am the last to know of this, but if not, thought I'd pass it on!

I didn't know what kind of oil my 780 uses, but I knew that it needed a different type/weight of oil than what I buy for my 350SE.

I have been buying Mobile Velocity #10 for my machines. All of them are machines that are not in the 7 or 8 series which take the #6.
I have found that a lot of Bernina stores don't seem to know which kind of oil goes with which machines. Someone who worked for a dealer told me this was because there was some confusion about which oil to use when the first 7 and 8 series machines came out. Bernina issued a correction but the old information is still given out by folks who didn't notice the update.
I think Bernina should have the correct information on the packaging containers and that way the consumer could easily tell which oil they should be using. This thing with the white caps and black caps on the oil containers is a stupid way to handle the issue because there is no easy way to figure out what you need. That means you must rely on what you are told by the dealer or his employees.

yes, depending on the dealer is dangerous! I stopped at a dealer (not my normal one) to pick up oil for my 7 and 8 series machines and they only had one type of oil on display, not two. Said that I could use the oil they had on any of my Bernina's. I decided to wait until I was at my regular dealer. The dealer that told me this has been a Bernina dealer for many years and only sells machines, all Bernina. Quite scary.

Oh Janyce, that is scary! That dealer should be reported to Bernina USA.
We gave a superb Bernina dealer here. During a free class I attended on machine maintenance, pre-7series, he was very clear that the 830s required a different oil than the other Berninas. IIRC, he said the oil for the 830s were safe to use on the other Berninas, but not vice versa.

Well, with everything else in life, it certainly pays to be informed. If it gets on my dealer's or my doctor's (you fill in the blank) nerves, too bad.

I agree, since some dealers apparently don't even know the difference!

Wow the things I learn here! Had no idea.
Thank goodness I did not oil with anything other then what
came with the machine. But I did oil my 635 with the 780 oil.
Yicks....

Perhaps a lot of dealers think it's a gimmick and don't give it the attention it deserves. I work with hydraulic machinery so we are huge on the grade and type of oil but before I did and someone told me I could only use one brand of oil I would have been very skeptical. I guess better education on dealers is key.
