Today I was out on a case and in small talk with our client, learned that she's a pattern maker. I think it's more because she loves it vs trying to make a living at it (e.g., The existence of family money was quite evident!).

She stated that she's a pattern maker and then followed up with "I know, I know, it's so arcane"

I said, NO! No it isn't!!! And she responded, "oh, it is...it's just..."

And I said, I made this jacket I'm wearing (B6169) and boy did her eyes LIGHT UP!She got so excited that I couldn't tell her I also made my top (S2255), pants (V9032) and outerwear jacket (S2153)! LOL! I didn't want her brain to burst from excitement!

Oooo--happy time for both of you.

Isn't it sad that she had to be apologetic for something she did regarding sewing?

Aww, that is nice that you made her feel so happy! And 'arcane' is a great word to hear someone use, although I hope she feels more positive after her encounter with you.

It actually is arcane. But that's not a bad thing.

Well, I don't know about that. We all wear clothes, usually multiple garments at a time, and a pattern maker would have been involved with almost all of them.

(I say "almost all" because pattern makers are not involved with traditional garments or with unsewn garments like saris.)

It's a specialist technical skill but an essential one.

It's a custom-made designer original. I made it myself.

I don't really think it's arcane either but...

I was going by this definition of "arcane:"
Understood by few; mysterious or secret.
It's unusual enough to prompt a post here. It may not be secret, but it's mysterious enough. So that's why I think it's arcane.

Did you tell her about the sewing pattern review website? She can come on here and be arcane with the rest of us!

I am totally aware of the definition of arcane; thanks.

Still don't think it is arcane but...

Tate, I did not! But I did get a giggle once when the cashier at Hancock asked if I knew about the site :)
