What to use for? (Moderated by EleanorSews)

I am thinking of buying a serger. My understanding is that they are used to make fleece and knit objects easier. Is this right? I have a regular sewing machine but it is a basic model. I am interested in making baby stretchy items and fleece type clothes

Yes. When I make my knit t-shirts, fleece sweatshirts for DH, or swimsuits for myself. I do almost* the entire thing on my serger, and I think it makes it very easy to do.
*I say almost because I sew my darts on my sewing machine.
I do most of my hemming, both knits and wovens, on my serger. And I use it to finish the edges of fabric.

Bonny lass, bonny lass, will you be mine?
You shall neither wash dishes nor serve the wine;
But sit on a cushion and sew a fine seam,
And feast upon strawberries, sugar, and cream.

For polarfleece I prefer my sewing machine, it makes the seams less bulky and I often topstitch the seams open, but I do like to flatlock fleece, especially socks. Besides knits I use my serger for seam finishing ravelly wovens such as linen and rayon. It's also wonderful for home dec.

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.
