Re: Need help extending fit on a jacket (posted on 7/14/15 7:49 PM ET)
Hello everyone!
I need to extend the fit on a jacket. How can I do this? I'm thinking I can remove the zipper and add a fabric panel, but I'm not sure exactly how to go about it.

The zipper is in the back. Looking at the side seam it looks like I can let it out quite a bit but how will that impact the armhole? I added an additional photo of the inside seam.

Do you have a similarly large seam in the sleeve? If you do you can pick apart the sleeve seam and let out the side seam and the sleeve. You have to let out both seams ( sleeve and side ss ) the same amount where they are sewn together at the armscye. Then sew the sleeve back in.
This will only give you more circumference from the bottom of the armscye down to the hem. If you need more circumference from around the bust up it won't help.

I like simplystitches's strategy. I wouldn't mess with the zipper.

Unfortunately there isn't a large seam allowance on the sleeves.
Ordering a new one is not possible and somehow I have to make this jacket fit a student.

How much do you need to add for the circumference? And exactly where do you need to add? From shoulder down or????
If you add a panel down the back that doesn't add anything to the front plus it's going to cause the back neckline to sit wide to very wide on the shoulders. Even if you added a front and back panel it's going to sit wide on the shoulders since you'd be adding it right at cf/cb.
If you could give a bit more specific info on where and how much you need to add we might be able to help more. Extending the fit is a bit vague.

You can't make it a whole lot bigger. the person whom sewed it, took 5/8 inch seam allowances on the side seams. Even if you undid those, and sewed only a 1/4 inch seam allowance there instead (which is 2/8 of an inch instead) that means it would get bigger around by only 12/8ths if an inch. And 12/8'ths of an inch is only 1 and 1/2 inches wider. The way you know that and figure that out, is there are 4 pieces of fabric in the 2 side seams and 4 times 3/8 inch bigger on each one is 12/8 is 1 1/2 inches larger. If you only need a tiny bit past that, then you could probably undo just some of the bottom of the princess seams and take a smaller seam allowance there, to eek a tiny bit more out that way too, (around the waist of it) but not much. I think those are your only options. Just since a band uniform is supposed to make your child, look like everyone else wearing the same thing. If you stick more fabric into it, particular non matching fabric, my guess is your child won't like it, and will be embarrassed with the other kids there, as then it's going to make them look different than all the other kids instead. I think it's important for the child to feel comfortable and like all the other kids in a uniform, so I personally would not do that, unless all the Mom's of the other kids were all doing that kind of thing to their kid's outfits too also, in that case, it might not matter then, as maybe they would still even all match up to each other.
