I was cut off form TV and Radio for much of this weekend. In fact the only TV I saw was about 12 seconds of Bush promising that Trent Lott’s new house would be bigger and better. Whenever I asked anyone how things were progressing I heard about the awfulness of what had happened coupled with “the looting” I’d begun to wonder the federal budget had become required reading. But no, it appears that those with nothing left but floating bodies had gone on a spree of sorts. Clearly illegal, but is it any different

or Enron, or executive pay packages or golden parachutes or even our own petty dishonesty.
About 12 years ago I managed to become lost is one of those now devastated New Orleans neighborhoods. I clearly recall my only thought as we drove around and it was this “Oh, my Chirst” Not from fear but from appalled shock at the sight of abject poverty. I’d seen it in Nepal, Thailand, and Egypt until that night I had not realized our own dirty little secret.

I'm willing to admit that I would loot food and medical supplies, guns if I felt they would keep my family safer, and any other goods if I thought I could trade them for necessities for my family. I was also appalled at the poverty away from the main tourist areas when I visited NO. I note that wuite a few local officials are reported as wearing "found" clothing, and good for them, I say, if they stayed at their posts. I'm definitely of the "you have to walk in somebody's shoes before you can judge them" school of thought.

Good point, Gus. Those focusing on the looting are missing the point.

How do you explain people shooting at the contractors who are trying to fix New Orleans? How do you explain the rapes that happenend during the days before the astrodome was finally evacuated? I agree, looting misses the point. The kind of lawlessnes that has been and continues to go on there is much much more serious. You can ingnore this crime, but you've got to realize that most of the time the victims of these people are the other poor people who live in the inner city. By making excuses for this behavior you making excuses for crimes against the poor. I think the poor deserve better than that.

Who is making excuses for rapists and murderers? That's quite a leap from the original post.

I hope someone asks the shooters the “why” of it. I think it is a form of madness. You live through a hurricane of that magnitude, your life as you knew it is gone, help of any substantial sort is days in arriving and then it is by noisy helicopter taking people out pretty much one at time. I am discounting a certain percentage that is an ever present
criminal element and I also have several days of newspapers to catch up on for the day to day reporting.

In this PARTICULAR case (I was not speaking in generalities), the looting is a moot point. The merchandise that's being taken is going to end up in a landfill anyway. It's not like Sears is gonna go in there, grab their craftsman tools, and stock them in their Buffalo store?
Yes, there are idiots taking unnecessary stuff. There are also idiots shooting at relief workers. There are idiots everywhere. I'm not concerned about them. My point is that those who are looting necessary items.... that should not be anyone's concern right now. Let's get them out of NO.

I don't know how I would act under extreme circumstances. Certainly some of the survivors--and I stress the word survivors--may have taken advantage of the chaos, others been driven to the edge and respond in ways that perhaps they wouldn't imagine they ever could. My daughter, who is in social work, pointed out that many are probably experiencing post traumatic stress disorder. I think that many people may be feeling extreme anger and hopelessness. These are not excuses for criminal activity, but possible reasons.

The mayor, Ray Nagin says there was a colossal amount of drug use and trafficking going on in NOLA, and that would mean that a lot of the people that were unable to leave were addicts. The drug abusing population was suddenly even more disporportionate to the non-abuse population, and the junkies were not able to score.
An already high crime rate escalated.

Please - it was the Superdome where all this was going on. They were evacuated to the Astrodome. We are glad to help!
