I just finished a cute little jumper, ruffled at bottom, and lined. The pattern called for the lining to be attached at the hem so that the bottom seam does not show (this involves leaving one side seam of the lining open, turning fabric, sewing hem, and closing the lining with a slip stitch). I was just not happy with the way the little jumper looked--it did not drape well, even though I went by the pattern and did everything the way I was supposed to, and watched the video tutorial.

Ripped the bottom hem apart and just finished the lining hem with a narrow hem, and let it hang. Looks so much better! I have noticed that some of the RTW linings also hang free with a ruffle on the lining.

I have also done the hem another way where the bottom of the lining is basted to the bottom of the fashion fabric, and then the ruffle is attached. Seam shows, but I topstitch it, and it really does not seem to be a problem, and the jumper did hang well.

Any other thoughts? Thanks!

If it hangs well, you did the right thing. I've never seen a pattern telling me to stitch the lining of a skirt to the outer skirt. Vests, jackets, blouses, yes. Skirt, no.

I have seen that before on small girls size 2 to maybe 6X kind of A- line pop over your head jumpers, most times they then have some buttons and button holes on the shoulders to get it off and on. So the whole jumper is only two pieces- front and back. And ditto with the lining- reverse side of it, which would be exactly the same. And lined that way, so they even can be reverse-able and worth either side out. I have made some of those with just firmly woven cotton or maybe cotton knit, and the same on each side of it, that both sides of it, had the same fabric properties to it (but just a different color or print) and that worked fine. Ones I made long ago, had no ruffle on the bottom of them though.

So how would you determine whether a pattern/garment has reversability potential? Shape? Construction? Fabric?

Most children's patterns that I have for DGD are lined with the lining attached at the hem, as your pattern instructed. If your project looks better with the lining hanging separately, then it's all good.

Thanks ladies! Yes, I am making sizes 1 thru 4 for a little girls' jumper with button closure at the shoulders. Maybe the ruffle is throwing me off somehow...I do so much like the concept of the lining being attached to the hem, but will end up using a different technique than instructed by the pattern.

Another thing that throws me off is the pattern calls for 1/4 inch seams (woven fabric). I can sew those, but when it comes to finishing the seams with a serger, which is my preferred method, it becomes more of a 3/8 inch+ seam. I've been pinking the seams, but would prefer to serge. Think I will just adjust my patterns from a 1/4 inch seam to a 1/2 inch seam so I have enough seam to finish it with the serger.

I made another jumper today using the technique I had used before where I baste the lining and fashion fabric at the hem, add the ruffle, stitch, and then topstitch. Was better, but I think I still like the lining only attached at the neckline and arms and loose at the hem--just hangs better. Thanks for listening and giving me your thoughts!
