Kenmore same as …? (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

I need a new hand mixer and ordered one from CHEFs that cost about $60. But then I was at Sears yesterday and saw a Kenmore that looked exactly the same for less than half the price. I bought it and brought it home, compared them side by side -- and yes, except for one bit of trim on the CHEFs mixer that's a different color, they ARE exactly the same: features, controls, buttons, accessories. So was wondering -- do these places all get their products from the same factories in China?
The user comments are mixed on both brands, so I'm inclined to return the more expensive one and take a chance on the cheaper one. Plus the customer service from the first place has been less than ideal.

I'm not familiar with either but the retractable cord is a great idea!

Sears does not and never has manufactured anything themselves. They contract with manufacturers to brand with the Sears, or Kenmore, or Craftsman, or whatever label. Sometimes this is an existing model that is relabeled, sometimes it is made especially for Sears. Manufacturers will change from time to time as markets dictate.

These are not small appliances, but I heard that their sewing machines were New Home (Janome) and most of the washers Whirlpool.

In my experience over the years, Sears has always stood behind the products that carry its name. I'd be inclined to return the pricey model and keep the Sears model.

I would return the more expensive one, only because CHEF's seems to have high prices on most of their items. And in the case of a hand mixer there probably is no difference between them except the label.
Al is exactly right, Kenmore works with appliance manufacturers to have items made to their specifications, or to have their label put on an item. These are not necessarily made in China though.
I used to work for Whirlpool, and many people called because they thought that because Whirlpool made their Kenmore appliance, that Whirlpool would cover any warranty work. Not true. If the appliance says Kenmore you have to go through Sears.
Also, although the items may look exactly the same cosmetically, they may not have the same exact internal workings as other brands due to the seller (in this case Kenmore) having different specifications. This is especially true in larger appliances. Although, as I mentioned, in the case of a hand mixer there is probably little to no difference besides the label.

Thanks for the comments. FWIW I'm keeping the Sears one and sending back the other one. There's nothing out there now like my old Braun Multimix, so this will have to do, I guess. [grumpy old lady] Why is buying anything such a pain these days? [/grumpy old lady]

You're funny, not grumpy, and you're right! Fwiw, I am venturing to guess it's because things are cheaply mass-produced, without good quality controls, of inferior materials especially lots of plastic.
