Making a jacket that is interlined (Moderated by Deepika)
Posted on: 2/22/16 11:40 AM ET
I decided to interline with lovely flannel a bomber/varsity jacket to add extra warmth to the stretch cotton fabric.
BUT it has welt pockets in the front so sewing interlining in would be weird to get them perfect obviously.
So I thought to attach interlining to the front lining instead.
It would be a bit more bulky at seams but I am hand knitting collar and waist bands so lining plus interlining will be machine sewn in....I think...I haven't scrutinized the lovely sparse Burda instructions.
Front knitted waistband does not go all the way to zipper...it has little fabric square there..not sure if that needs interlining or maybe just interfacing....... but there I could
If you need a line drawing of pattern I'll try to get one attached
Any thoughts/ideas much appreciated

If the underlining is temporarily adhered to the fashion fabric, you can put welt pockets in -- I've done it with flannel on a washable wool shirting adhered together with Elmer's School Glue.
But you can also underline the lining if you like, and it's no big deal.
I would interface the rectangular bit at the bottom of the zipper instead of underlining it. Then again, I interface zipper plackets anyhow.

Did you pre-shrink the flannel?

Thanks kayl. I'll just interline the lining.
Not sure about elmers glue LOL
Making perfect welt pockets is difficult enough without an additional layer to slide around

Yes interface bottom zipper pieces at CF

Ah, the Elmer's school glue I was talking about is the stuff meant for little kids that washes out in the laundry. I find less distortion of the fabric with that than the "fabric glue sticks" that are sometimes suggested for trims, etc, and then it comes right out in the next wash.
I actually find the wash-out glue quite useful -- when I need something stiffer than I can reasonably manage with starch for some odd reason, School Glue works. And when I underline pants for people who wear leg braces, dots of Elmer's School Glue on the seam allowance easily hold together fabric and underlining and then get munched off by the serger. (non-underlined pants, worn with drop lock braces, don't last more than about 10 wearings; with underlining, pants last for at least 60 or so wearings).
