Y'all made me buy it, now ya gotta help me. (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952)

Clickable link: I ordered two "yards" of this fabric just now.
Impulse buy, but I absolutely LOVE it. I'm unsure if 2 yards means 2 yards or 2 panels, 45" each. I can't imagine they'd cut it at random points along the panels, so I'm hoping it is two panels and really 2.5 yards. Either way, at $12 per yard I will find something to do with it!
I am imagining a dress with the border placed at the top instead of the bottom. I think I look better with they eye drawn up instead of down. This will also allow me to use a pattern that is not square at the bottom.
Any and all suggestions welcome. I am currently working with the Perfectly Fitted Shirt pattern by J Stern Designs while I am learning more about fitting. I plan on using the pattern as a block later to make a basic sheath dress with a back zipper. I also think I look best in fit-n-flare dresses, so that is my thought process as well on using the border upside down.
Whatcha think?

Little strokes fell great oaks. On the other hand, go big or go home!
Projects completed in 2024: 3 pairs gloves. Four pairs of jeans. Five custom tarps. A dozen linen hankies. A wool wrap for a friend. Four linen bath towels and 24 washcloths. Two bed pillows.
38.5 yards of fabric out.

With that odd description, we really don't know what you bought. Let us know when it arrives.

Measure twice, cut once. While this saying is useful in many ways, I have no qualms about editing my posts.

I put a link to it at the beginning of my post. Check it out, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
I edited it hoping the link shows up more. I tried to post a picture, but I still can't seem to do that in the forums for some reason.

My first thought was a jacket...but sometimes you have to let the fabric tell you what it wants to be-- not literally of course, but I like to play around with it on the dressform or draped on me in front of a mirror and see what looks best.

The description says 58"x 45" panel, so two would be plenty for a dress. However it is not a border print, it is a panel. My experience with panels is that the print is in the middle and runs length wise.

That fabric is gorgeous! I can see why you were tempted. If it were mine it might want to be a bag (or, um, a whole set of luggage from the amount you bought!), but how cute is this vintage Butterick pattern for panel prints?

This is an old etsy listing, but you might be able to track it down?

...Although any modern dress pattern would work, too, obviously.

Oh! Border prints run lengthwise and can be cut on the cross grain, right? So can't this be used in the same way?
Although, stirwatersblue, I do love those ideas!
And my plan is to make a bag from scraps, for sure!

I think your original idea would work really well. From the pics on the website, it looks to me as if the print actually runs crosswise every 45", so you wouldn't even have to cut on the crossgrain. Are you thinking of having the print go all the way up to the shoulder line? It looks to me that the print takes up almost a third of the panel, or 15". On me that means that, from the shoulder, it would stop at about the waistline of an empire style dress. I think that would look very stylish. Keep to a simple style with a defined waist, but not too much flare. I would keep the focus on the print, and not overpower it with a full skirt.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that fabric! I like the vertical placement like SWBs reco on the far left side. But that is not fit and flare. Not sure how fit and flare will work with the floral at the top.
When I first saw this, I thought maxi skirt with the floral at the bottom. It would also be cute as a denim jacket with a solid back of the floral border print forming a v in the middle and floral front yokes.
If this had been remotely in my colors, I would have seriously fallen off the fabric fast wagon. Enjoy!

I bought that a while back and made a denim skirt! I went against the stretch to make the floral pattern go a different directions but I put the floral on one side and the black on the other, both front and back.
I have enough left I might use in the gussets of a skirt perhaps.
