Sheer fabric for Deer & Doe's Airelle (Moderated by EleanorSews)
Posted on: 4/30/16 4:29 AM ET
Hi all,
Slowly making my way through the muslin for Deer & Doe's Airelle Blouse. Knock on wood, I should be able to cut fabric soon!
I ended up deciding on a lightweight, transparent silk voile. In order for it NOT to be transparent, I need to either line or underline it.
From everything I've heard, this pattern works best with a really lightweight, drape-y fabric. I worry anything I would underline it with would end up adding bulk (even my usual go-tos like cotton lawn, etc). In that case, should I just try to do a lightweight lining instead?
Thanks so much! It's my first time in a long time sewing with a fabric that's NOT opaque!

if the fabric is beautiful in its sheerness, you could just wear a camisole under it.

I agree with the suggestion of a camisole.

I'm in the cami camp. :)
...That said, I know for me, in order to cover my bra straps, I have to wear a tank, not a cami, and that can look too casual sometimes. If that's the case, maybe it would be possible to do a sort of "mock cami" lining on the bodice, with a lower neckline, and not line the sleeves. Something with a good drape, so it can hang free from everywhere but the shoulder seams, and not change the hand of the voile.

You could also just double the front and back pieces. If you match the fabric well you would have one effect, and if you just slap the two pieces together any old way, another effect. Either could be fabulous.
The second front and back would be sewn together as a lining. You wouldn't sew fronts together and backs together, because you would probably get weird pulling at the darts.

I have several RTW shirts that have the front interlined; Just use them as a single piece.

I agree, wear a camisole under it.

I would underline the body. A camisole under it might look a little off with the collar.
