Need a dual voltage hair dryer (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)
Posted on: 6/26/16 11:14 AM ET
We are going to Europe and will need a hair dryer in a situation where we might not be able to get one at our hotel. How easy is it to find a dual voltage dryer in standard North American stores? Am I on a fool's errand or will I be able to pick one up at
Walmart?

What I think you need is an International Adaptor and Convertor Kit.This will allow you to use your hair dryer and most other electrical devices. Ours is a Conair "Stowaway" but we have had it for sometime now so not sure that brand is still on the shelves.
You could try a big box store to see if they have any - this gizmo will serve you in many places in the world.
We have used ours in more places than I have fingers for

You can pick up an adapter almost everywhere -it's one of those things that you don't notice until you need one! London Drugs or Shoppers Drug Mart should carry them.
Here are a couple at

And take a look at dryers at Target, etc. for a switch for voltage. With those, you'll only need the plug adapter that is smaller and lighter.

All you need is a outlet plug adapter and a "travel"'hairdryer. Here in the US they can be easily found. There are vendors online.... Magellan's, TravelSmith, any store that caters to travel. And check Amazon. Travel hair dryers always have dual voltage options and one just turns the dial or moves the switch.
BTW, if you have Apple iDevices, you will not need a voltage converter; just the outlet plug adapter only. Apple chargers have the built in converter and you don't have to do a thing. And you can plug a kindle charger into the apple USB port too.

I would definitely go with a travel sized blow dryer and adaptor. You'll need the adaptor for all kinds of things anyways. Should be able to get both at London Drugs, or maybe even Winners.
I just bought a new adaptor and found one that had both a regular plug (for my curling iron) plus a USB, so I could plug in two items at once.
But before you go spending money, have you checked your hotels to see if they will provide blow dryers? I have never had to carry one over - most of the main chains provide them in rooms, and they'll note that on their website. And if you're just going to one country you may want to just pick up one over there, especially if luggage weight is an issue.

Patty, Target only lasted about a year in Canada. Then that little dog put its tail between its legs and ran back across the border!

Loads available at London Drugs and they sell the plug converter in the hair appliance section too.
I bought one at Chatters, the Babyliss Pro something, for about $50. So tiny, works pretty well in different countries and seems hot/powerful enough for my misbehaving hair.

Cheap fabrics, like cheap shoes, are a false economy.

I have the Babyliss Pro TT 1500. It has a dual voltage switch, and is powerful enough that I use it as my main hairdryer.
