Hello:

I have a Halloween project that consists of draping fabric over helium balloons to create a floating effect. Since the standard 11" diam helium balloon can only support about 4.8g before it starts to sink, I am looking for the fabric with the least amount of weight. Ideally the fabric would be white and sheer.

I did find the following which comes in at 5g per sq meter:

But they don't sell small quantities and I only need a few yards :(

Any ideas would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks!

I checked out Dharma Trading and there seemed to be a few good options depending on your budget.

Mosquito net, .64oz/sq yd

Harem Cloth, 1.5oz/sq yd

And a few more options here.

Hope this helps!!

(edit: I think I can spell...)

(double edit: I didn't realize you were using grams, I was thinking oz. So it looks like those might be a bit heavy if you're looking to have a lot of fabric on them. Dharma might have something else to fit the bill--you can always email them to ask. They're super responsive.)

Wow, that is extremely light! My first thought was also to check out Dharma trading, and their silk gauze is probably the lightest, but even the 3 mm stuff comes in at 13 gsm (1 momme = 4.34 gsm). It's pretty inexpensive though, so might be worth buying a few yards and experimenting.

Maybe you need bigger helium balloons?

Organza is not very drapey, and poly organza is even worse, so it probably wouldn't work without a lot of hassle.

Dharma was my first thought, too, but as Charlotte noted, their silk gauze (which would drape way better than organza) is too heavy. I think she's right and you need bigger balloons if you're going to try to drape a meter. Either that, or smaller squares.

Pretty cool idea, though!

Thanks everyone for the replies! The Silk Gauze may do the job. I'm ordering some to give it a try. Thanks for the help!
