Old favorites are ready for the rag bag... (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952)

I've got an old pair of tight fitting pull-ons that are sort of like leggings but they're mostly cotton ( I think). They look and feel like a cotton gabardine/twill but of course have some stretch crosswise, though very, very little lengthwise. Unfortunately, I cut off all the tags because they were scratchy. These are very comfortable and have just enough stretch, and elastic, to fit over your hips....so are very form fitting. ( I like the fact that they don't have a lot of bunched up fabric and elastic at the waistline.)
I'd appreciate some suggestions on the proper fabric to duplicate this look and any ideas on patterns would be great, too! Mine have a little vent at the ankle. I'm even thinking that putting in a fly front zipper would help to keep the elastic from losing "its grip". I still think they would need elastic to keep them up and get the right fit. I could also use some suggestions for patterns.
Thanx

Have you thought about polyester lycra? I have a few pairs of pants from express that are made from that, they have a zipper in the front, look like regular pants, but I wear them for skating. So comfy!

Are your pants close-fitting along the leg? I think I know what you mean. Are these the kind of pants that skaters use for warming up - I've got a friend who runs and she wears something like that. I guess I just like the look and feel of cotton. Does poly/lycra have a sheen or is it flat (meaning matte)?

How about this Burda pattern? It's designed for stretch wovens. If you want to see the drawings, click on "Technische Zeichnung."

Would a cotton/lycra twill be what you're looking for? Wazoodle has a few stretch twills Wazoodle twills and so does Fabric.com fabric.com twills. Unfortunately they don't say how much stretch; I don't think they're all that stretchy, certainly not like a knit. If you're going to put in a zipper that shouldn't matter. I also thought they would have more selection, you may want to try other places.
Look for a pattern for stretch wovens rather than for knits.

Elona,
Those do have the same close fit as mine. The waist is lower, and it looks like there are zippers at the ankle instead of a vent but I could make a few changes in those areas. Could also probably move the zipper to the front. I don't know why but side zippers have always bugged me.
Thanks, I think these are worth a try.

Thanks for the links, Tessa. Makes you wonder about the amount of stretch, doesn't it? Surely it must vary.

Yes, I wish they would include the percentage stretch in the fabric description. Some places do that for knits. I would guess that the more lycra, the more stretch. I know that stretch denim I've bought with 1 or 2% lycra isn't very stretchy, just has a bit of give.
I'm with you on the side zipper. I don't like them either.

Emmaonesock sells the RPL, which is Rayon, poly lycra. The one I have looks like a woven twill on the surface and the lycra gives it the stretch. Lovely stuff and perfect for your pants.

They're supposed to give you a smoother, slimmer, profile but I've always found it to be the opposite. Maybe it's just my weird hips.
