Hello all,

It appears that my 4 year old Oliso may have died the other day. Even though it was emptied after last use, it spewed water when I picked it up. It also became a mess when I turned it on. Feeeling like this is the end.

I also have a Panasonic 360 Freestyle wireless iron, but the Oliso was so much heavier, which I like but only sometimes. Hope that makes sense.

So, I'm looking for another 1800 watt iron. Appreciate any thoughts/ideas. TIA.

I have a T-Fal Ultraglide which I love -- it is 1700 watts, provides great steam both vertical and horizontal, has a good precision point and I've had no dripping problems.

After a couple of bad experiences with expensive irons, I have been using the T-Fal Ultraglide for about the last 6 years -- I get them at Costco for under $50 and they last at least 2 years (first one was about 2 years and the second is still going strong). A much better deal than the $250 Rowenta that lasted less than 2 years and then I couldn't get the part to repair it so Rowenta gave me a deal on a higher end model that just made it to the 2 year mark and started spewing water everywhere as soon as you turned it on.

My LQS swears by the Olisios and I've used them at quilt retreats and classes but not sure I'm ready to "invest".

Hi

I purchased the Rowenta energy saving model, the Eco Intelligence which is 1700 watts and I am happy with it.

The Rowenta that I had before lasted about 5 to 6 years and I liked it because the steam was great and it never leaked water. I had to get rid of it because the temperature dial broke off and I could not get it to stay on for a prolonged period of time.

There are cheaper models out there but they tend to leak water if the steam temperature is not high enough.

I also considered the higher end T-Fal models made in France, because we have two in our quilting group sewing day room and they work fine. I read that the T-Fal is the number one selling iron in Europe.

In the end I decided to give the Rowenta a try because of the 25% energy savings promise.

I'd give my Oliso 3 stars and I would not repurchase the brand without convincing.

The autolift mechanism cacked out after 10 months but the iron itself remains a glorious steam machine nearly 3 years later. It is prone to odd twitches once in a while where it has hot flashes or turns itself off and needs to be unplugged before it will restart.

Zero response from the manufacturer when I contacted them during the warranty period. Not even an auto reply.

I use three irons on a regular basis, kind of like collecting sewing machines. I have a black Hamilton Beach iron I use when piecing or making purses, very lightweight, a Hamilton Beach Digital Durathon 1700W which is a heavy iron and a Rowenta DG520 1800W steam generator.

I like all of them and use the steam generator mostly when ironing fabric and clothes. I use the Durathon when adding interfacing, it gets really hot and has a nice steam output.

I have had zero problems with any of these irons, the steam generator iron was the most expensive but I love I can iron fabric or clothes for a few hours without worrying about running out of steam and when pressing yardage of fabrics I only have to iron one side, lots of steam with this iron.

Both Hamilton Beach irons have retractable cords which is great for storing.

Laura Star iron, super expensive and uses dry steam so never any distortion. Love this iron!

I had an expensive Reliable iron, and while I loved it, I did not love its 3 minute auto shut off. (V95) So I stopped using it and now use a fabulous cheap Black & Decker.
But alas the model I have has been updated so it is slightly more expensive but still reasonable.

Black & Decker Digital Advantage

I agree with Muffet that much has been said and more... expecially since everyone has their preferences and opinions.
