what do you call it when you make a trial version of something with a not so good fabric to see if it's going to fit, before you make it with the good fabric?

Or a mock-up, trial version, first iteration, whatever you like. If you are talking about it to non-sewers, other terms are useful to have. They NEVER understand "muslin" without an explanation.
