New to embroidery...
I'm trying to embroider my son's name on his quilt but the needle keeps breaking. This never happened. Help!

I'm not terribly experienced at this but wonder if the stitching might be too dense.

While I didn't suffer a broken needle, last summer I did reduce the size of my grandchild's name (used Embrilliance) and the thread kept shredding and breaking. It took me a few false starts to realize that I'd reduced too far for the density of the stitch -- thus creating too much friction and shredding my thread. Perhaps something similar for you ?

Thanks for the feedback.
After walking away from it. I rethreaded everything top and bobbin and changed the needle multiple times. I finally got it going. This machine is so finicky...uggh. Thanks for the tips.

Which brand/model embroidery machine do you have ?

Three Organ needles came with my now older stand alone embroidery machine. It didn't say which kind of Organ needles on the needles. I bought two packages Organ needles, size 11 blue tip and size 14 red tip, recommended by a Janome dealer. Those needles seemed to break after a short time.

Then I bought Schmetz and Klasse embroidery needles on sale,I had to adjust the tension a bit. Since then I always buy Schmetz or Klasse embroidery machine needles for my embroidery machine.

Schmetz embroidery machine needles........size: 75/11, 90/14........
Feature: Light ball point, wide eye and groove.
Fabric Use: Use with rayon, polyester and other specialty embroidery threads. The special scarf, widened groove and enlarged eye protect fragile threads and guard against excess friction allowing trouble-free embroidery and decorative stitching.

Not sure what brand machine you have but if it's a Bernina...be sure you're using the straight stitch needle plate and dropped dogs!

I have a Babylock Sophia 2. I only use Schmetz needles but it was my first time embroidering snuggle cotton/flannel. This machine has given me so much grief. I know Babylock's are supposed to be awesome but ever since it went into service for one unrelated issue I have been having problems. The dealer sucks and Babylock is standing behind the dealer instead of helping me.

I love Schmetz needles, and I had a Sophia 2 for a while. What kind of stabilizer are you using, and what brand of thread?

Both of those will make a huge difference depending on the quality.

I use Floriani thread, and Floriani stabilizers. I learned the hard way, quality in, and quality out.

You will have problems if:
Your pattern is too dense,
If your stabilizer is not the right one for your project, (too light, too dense)
If your fabric and stabilizer is not hooped correctly
etc, etc.

Can you check with another dealer? Is there one not too far?
Is there a quilting guild you can contact in your area?

Good luck! Post your details.

I was able to get it running. But I use the Maderia thread and the cut away stabilizer. I was just using basic lettering to put my son's name on my very first quilt.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.
Nope the next closest dealer is a ways away. I'm selling this boy. I'm going to get it serviced to make sure it's okay. But me and Ms. Sophia never bonded. I HATE that machine.

Before you give it up, you might want to take it to a different dealer for them to look at. It sounds like the machine might be "out of sinc." Also, try backing off on your speed a bit. I have yet to get my embroidery machine to run at full speed and get perfect results. If I back it off a bit it works much better.

I drive a good distance for good service. Because I live in the country.

Call ahead. Tell them you have a bit of a drive and ask if someone can take a look at it as well as a test drive while you wait. Make a shopping/lunch-out day of it! Take a friend and go to the movies.

PS: Pre-washed flannel is easier to stitch. I switched to Titanium coated Organ brand needles years ago and purchased in bulk from Allbrands. Love my BL, which is now approaching the old age of 10 years.

Best wishes for success!
