So, is it just me or what?

I have been looking for an economical solid stretch bottom weight fabric to test a pattern and was also checking JoAnns coupons buying stuff for my DD who has been bitten by the quilting bug. As I read the reviews on the stretch sateen, I was flabbergasted at the number of complaints about the color of fabric received not matching what was seen on the computer. Really? I thought most folks understood they shouldn't expect exact matches. Am I crazy, or what? If color is critical, you need to buy samples, yes?

I'm impressed by places like EmmaOneSock who will supply a Pantone number.

But as for me, I set my bar pretty low (how exact do I need to be for knits intendedd to be t-shirts?) I order almost all my fabric from FabricMart, and their descriptions match what I see on my laptop screen. (Robin's egg blue, varying descriptions of black, etc.) When the fabric arrives, it's always about what I expected or better.

Most people who order on the internet - or even via old fashioned catalogs - should know this. If you order navy and get powder blue, that is a problem with the listing. But if you order navy & it is the wrong shade of navy, shame on you. (Not literally you, of course, Eleanor. The figurative you. )

I wish using the Pantone numbers was more common, & that the swatches they used to sell were still available. That is so handy! I got a perfectly matching fabric from Emma One Sock using the pantone number.

pssst ... this lavender 100% cotton twill is $4 a yard today (but the width is 44/45 so it may not be that great of a deal).

I was playing around today and found when they do their A-B-C sales some fabric shows up in more than category. So "twill" was also "cotton" and there it was.

But ... muslin didn't turn up under "cotton" so it's still $4.40. I guess it's how they tag their fabrics with respect to the database they use.

Yes, Anne, this! Pantone numbers!

It just amazed me that folks would complain about color. I think my cell and iPad are more accurate than my computer monitor.

It's not even fine print! People just don't read any more.

There's a big difference between I want a blue skirt and I need a navy to match this blouse!

So right Eleanor - EOS gives the Pantone number but even Linda can't always nail it right on and will say "close to" - always get what I expect.

Sawyer Brook is quite good too in describing their fabric colours.

But in the end it is really surprising that there are complaints about this - if it's way off I can understand but really??

Fabric.com colors always look different on my monitor and devices than in real life. They sell swatches, which is worth buying for an expensive or important project.

I'd jump on that if you need it. I've come to equate Japanese textiles with Italian. Both are usually fine quality. 100% cotton shirting is $16.99 around here and its 44"-45".

BTW - are there any garment fabric shops in Chattanooga yet? I'm still thinking Fine Fabrics in Atlanta is closest. I'm in Knoxville. I REALLY do not like color picking from the internet. Everything I've ordered so far has been what I have expected, but I have a few things I's like to color match - and I'm picky!

I think there's a good possibility anyone complaining about colors when ordering online may possibly be dealing with their own color deficiencies - not that of the vendor.

True, but on fabric.com (I think it was them), I recently saw some reviews that complained about fabrics not matching the photo, and the vendor noted, as a reply to the review, that they redid the photo.

Monitors do vary, but vendor pics do, too.
