How to hammer in striaght (Moderated by Deepika)
Posted on: 11/2/05 2:32 PM ET
Well I have almost finished these jeans and and am getting ready to hammer in the special button that has awl male piece on inside and nice brass decorative frontside piece. I have done this once before on another pair of jeans but top button came out slightly damaged and got put in with a little slant. Any tips on getting it perfect this time? Of course I put a piece of cloth betwen hammer and button and thought i came down straight. Should I put a little circle of something between underside of button and outside piece of fabric so it goes in straight. Some thick cardbord or something.
Thanks !

The instructions I have on the packet of Jeans Buttons I use says -
1. Push pin portion through material from inside in required position
2. Place button face down on hard surface (I use the wooden breadboard with a handee paper towel between button and board so that it is still a firm surface but the button won't get scratched) Locate pin in hole at back of button. Press firmly or tap with hammer to hold.
3. give the PIN a sharp blow with a hammer so that the 2 components close firmly on the material.
If on the other hand you're using the heavy duty snaps, then you can get packets with a shaped holder that you put the decorative piece into so it doesn't get damaged. Not all packets have this but it's worth buying one if you see it.
Hope that helps

thanks Keely
I think that little "holder" is the ticket to keeping it straight.
I was going to try to make something but I think I have those snaps somewhere
Next pair of jeans I am going to use those "buttons " all the way down the fly so i better get them straight !

Interesting question. I haven't put one of those things in for a while, but now you have me wondering whether a vise would work. Do you think the two pieces could be securely fastened by slow pressure, or does it take a quick whack with the hammer?

Just to let you know I wore my brand new jeans today, so comfy
Will review as soon as i get pics.
I couldnt find that "cup" piece keely to fit , but I really didnt need it . I put patterned outside piece on top of several layers of paper towels and that on a wooden cutting board on floor. I had poked awl male piece already thru waist band and then 2-3 big whacks with a hammer. Beautiful ! No dents. I LOVE jean buttons, So strong and built in " spacing" for thick layer of denim.
Next jeans i will use a bunch down fly. Way quicker too than sewing all individual buttons.
Thanks everyone

Glad it worked out. I got my holder thing in a bag of Heavy Duty Snaps made by "ENZED". If you're coming back to NZ you might find them then.

Re: Jean's closure (posted on 11/4/05 3:37 PM ET)
I made a pair of jeans from a beautiful dark stretch denim for a wedding in Nashville. I had a pair of red cowboy boots from years ago and they looked great. Only problem was that I don't live in Nashville and the snap fell apart while I was dressing in the hotel. We rounded up a safety pin (which was very tricky to apply so it didn't show - jeans are supposed to be snug, aren't they) and barely made it to the 'church' on time. The pants are still waiting for a closure which works. Never again will I try a snap on a heavy denim. (Nor will I travel with untested clothing!) I like the idea of using the snap setter to support the button. Where do you find the jeans buttons?

I love tack buttons but the last batch I bought was horrible. Two of them fell off. And they weren't even under stress! I will definitely not buy that type again. I'll be keeping an eye out for some when I'm in NYC. I've used them often in the past and never had a problem until this time. I wish I could remember where I bought the ones I used on an old jacket.
I have used the patterned ones from JoAnn's and they worked really well. But sometimes you just want a plain button.

I bought the jeans "tack" buttons fronm Sewtrue.com. They thave great products,( Esp like their zips),great prices. Gigi, not sure why your tack fell off. Mine have held for ages and I make my jeans very snug. I got the brass ones, nice antique finish, nice wreath design on them. $2.50 for a dozen
