I love my serger & serged seams.

I make a lot of pants can't seem to properly serge fly extensions around the curve & down through the center front crotch point.

After I get to the bottom of the fly extension along the curve, I have difficulty swinging the fabric around to serge the length of the center front to the point. I typically take a chunk of fabric out of the pants and have to narrow the seam allowance or re-configure the curve altogether or throw the pants front piece against the wall & start over. I use the BL curve foot.

I'm beginning to think that i should just use an overlock stitch on my sewing machine.

Are there any tricks of the trade? What serging stitch to you use? Or what sewing technique do you use in that delicate area?

Thanks!

Do you clip the inside corner so you can straighten the edge as you serge?

Yup - I clip inside the seam allowance and I just can't get a clean serge in that area. It's an issue that only I can see in the end but it's still bothersome.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I find it easier to use my sewing machine zig zag for this application.

Maybe this will help.

I can't wait to try that, Debbie. You made it look so easy (as I smack myself).

The best fitting front crotch curve for me has a really sharp curve (Jalie patterns, see below on the right side). I serge the fly portion from the bottom to the waist edge, and secure the serged stitching where I started it. Then I go back to the front crotch extension and use my sewing machine's edge stitch for that. I look forward to trying Debbie's tip next time around...though the sample she shows does not have such a sharp curve as mine. Maybe it will take some practice!

I had already raised the front rise 1/2" and the back rise 1" after I made the shorts, so all I needed to do was a wedge under the butt from the side seam to the inseam, right under the crotch.

That was great! I added a link to your tutorial in my (Evernote) sewing notes.
