Hi folks, I've found a nice warm jacket, but to get one that fits my bum, the sleeves are at least 5" too long. Thoughts on how to hem? Should I be lazy and just tack the sleeves up underneath, or is removing and reattaching the elastic bias tape doable?

Thanks in advance!

If you open the sleeves in any way, you will have a feather blizzard. If this is real down, it's quite compressible, so you might be able to just quilt out the thickness of the last 5" or so, and turn it under.

For me, I'd probably just measure up 5", run three parallel lines of small straight stitch about 1/8" apart, then a 1/4" skip, then another couple of lines of small straight stitches and cut the sleeves in the skip space. Pick out the down bits and bind with fold over elastic, or knit cuffs, or whatever you'd like.

If the sleeves are filled with "down substitute", that's probably a polyester batting, and can be simply cut and bound or cuffed... no blizzard.

When working with down, it's good to have a shopvac around.

Have I ever told the story of the night a fellow botanist's down sleeping bag caught on something, and it snowed in the tent all night long. We all looked like we'd be caught in a bad road production of Swan Lake the next morning...

Re: Any Advice for how to hem a down jackets sleeves? (posted on 12/13/17 1:45 PM ET)
Oh my I can only imagine a busted sleeping bag!

It it real down, and I would be sure to create pockets to enclose as much down as possible before snipping.
