I just met the coolest lady! (Moderated by EleanorSews)

I went to the PX (where my Pfaff dealer is located) and a lady came in with some of her work. She is really good friends with the Pfaff ladies! Her work was amazing! She had a southwestern shirt that she sewed and then machine embroidered that was gorgeous! She was making a table cloth and napkin set for a wedding gift and brought in the napkins. She was wearing a beautiful coat which she made herself, and ALL of her clothing was made my her! I felt so honored to meet her, and what an inspiration it was. I know there was a thread here about how to make your clothes not look homemade and this lady has perfected it! Her seams on the shirt looked better than any RTW garment I have ever seen. She was very interested in me, a newbie, and gave me lots of advice. I can't wait till I can sew like that. I'm gonna get started on those pj pants tonight. I purchased lots of cheap muslin fabric so I won't be scared to ruin my pricey flannel. I think meeting and talking to this lady has made me want to sew beautiful things even more!

That's really cool to meet an inspiring person!
I always love seeing other people's work and it's even better when it's someone local who can inpsire you.

It's great to see an inspiration.
Of course, you want to keep in mind that she has been sewing for years. So don't be too hard on yourself when your garments don't look like hers! It takes practice and mistakes to get there.
I'm still in the mistakes stage...

With a great wardrobe that's still in the flat-fabric stage.

What a great experience, Aleelee! Thanks for sharing it with us.
I think this really underscores how very important it is for those in our midst who sew beautifully to be open, sharing, and supportive of our sisters (and brothers) who are just starting out. I imagine it might be an annoyance to nurture us newbies, but it seems essential for ensuring our art thrives. Think about it: the more of us who garment sew, the more and better resources that will be available to us! Just imagine: chain fabric stores throughout the country filled to the brim with *good* fabrics and notions. (A girl can dream, can't she?)

Kerry--It was great meeting her and seeig her work. Such beautiful things she made.
Anne--I suspect it will take me MANY years to get as good as her. She was an older lady and she told me she started to sew when she was 11 years old. Her machine was a Singer treadle that only sewed one way. Her family was poor and she had to learn to sew her own clothes.
Leslie--I didn't get into sewing until I got over here in Germany, so I can't wait to go back home and be able to go to Joannes or Hancocks! LOL The lady I met today told me of a great fabric place in town and I can't wait till I get a chance to check it out!
It does seem like there just aren't that many people who garment sew at the moment. Thank goodnes for PR! Most seem interested in quilting, which I am learning to do too, but I really am more interested in sewing clothes for myself to wear. Let's hope that there will be a sewing trend eventually and there will be more fabric and notion stores popping up all over!

Hey, Alisha, I hope you run into her again and can develop a friendship. Having a sewing buddy is the very best! I love my sewing buddies even though most of them are online friends and we never get to sit down to tea together...we do dream a lot about it, though!

Hi from just below the Danish border!
We are all over Germany but I guess we sewer are hiding behind our stashes :)
Were in Germany are you? We do have a German sewing site called "Hobbyschneiderin", where you can get in contact with sewers from your area.
I always get inspired by other sewers. I even inherited wadders from some ( why can't I just say no, when it comes to sewing??? ) ROFL!

MaryBeth--I do hope to run into her again. I would love to be-friend her and keep getting pointers from her. I need to go hang with the Pfaff ladies more often! LOL
Tini--I am in Heidelberg. I would love to find other sewers in this area, but I speak very little German and I am VERY shy. I am one of those hiding behind her stash! I really don't have a hard time striking up a conversation with strangers about sewing though! LOL

It's wonderful to meet someone who inspires you. My mother in law did that for me. I always thought of sewing as as not as good as RTW. That is, until she began sewing clothes for my kids. Oh my gosh, they were some of the most beautiful outfits I have ever seen before or since.
She inspired me to start and I haven't looked back. The best part is she was always so patient and helpful with my questions. I'm now sewing a designer vogue suit with her and I'm still learning.
