For denim overalls (for an infant) how does the innner construction/assembly on the bodice work in terms of lining, etc if there is a waistband. Do I need 2 layers of fabric for the bodice

No, you don't particular need it. You could do something else. But since if you just left all the edges raw instead, with no finish at all to it, it might not look as expected and might ravel away to nothing, and if some other choices are facings, bindings, or turning edges under several times and stitching them flat, or maybe having a plain 3 thread overlock on the raw edges, just lining it might really be a whole lot quicker, flatter and more easy even. But you could do anything you want. Maybe choose which ever one you think might come out of the washer and dryer best, just since with little kids clothes that get worn a lot and washed a lot, you probably are not going to bother to iron them afterwards ever at all. So, I think that makes facings there a bad thing, unless they were stitched down along all the outer loose edges of them into and through the front bib part of it probably.

I would look through my scraps for a piece of cotton/poly poplin-type blend in a matching color. (Something that is lighter in weight than the denim.) Once you find something, cut a piece and use it to line the bib. I think this would provide a clean and attractive finish, and something that would go through the laundry with no problem.
