Hi,

Comparing my size to the size chart, I notice that I'm slightly above size 6 for waist and hip, but below for bust. What should I do, should I use size 6 or size 8?

Thanx in advance.

I would use size 6 but add a fraction of an inch to the waist and hip so that you have a little "fit insurance." It will probably take some trial and error to fit yourself in the bust and shoulders. If you have a full bust, that must be taken into account (i.e. full bust adjustment, aka FBA).

The important place to fit is shoulders. Once you figure out how long you want your shoulder seam to be, from neckline to sleeve cap, you can then move down to the bust. If you wear a B cup it should be a good fit, but if you are larger or smaller you will need other adjustments. There are lots of discussions here on small and large bust adjustments.

Most patterns include multiple sizes, so it's simple to then graduate your lines to the larger size at the waist and hips. If your pattern doesn't have this just cut your waist and hips half an inch wider on each side. This will give you a total of two inches in circumference. Pin or baste together and adjust as needed.

I prefer using the high bust or chest measurement to choose pattern size, because it is the most difficult part of the pattern to adjust. You'll find plenty thread on the boards re: upper bust measurements.

As for being between sizes, I'd compare finished garment measurements. These are usually printed on the pattern pieces, but Simplicity and McCall have them on the back of the envelope. In general, pattern companies put enough ease in a pattern to reach the next size, so the 6 will probably be fine for you. Personally, I think there is too much ease in most patterns, but it depends on your personal preference. If you don't know what your preference is, then try measuring some clothes you already have to get comparison measurements.

Of course, if it is a skirt or pants pattern, you do not need to worry about your high bust measurement. Just use the largest of your waist/hips.
