what should I replace it with? (Moderated by Deepika, EleanorSews)

Could you give me your opinion if you prefer a washer with or with the agitator? Do you have a washing machine model you love? Please do not discuss front loaders as I have no desire to buy one. I know there is another thread that discusses washing machines but I just couldn't get a good idea from the thread
My washing is being replaced by Best Buy. It is Maytag Bravo with no agitator. I can replace it with the same thing or something else. I never felt it got the clothes and I hated the way it twisted and knotted everything. When I wash sheets the sheet covers the entire basket like a parachute.
I am so confused now. I don't know if I should go with the High Efficiency or the agitator type. I do not want to buy a front loader as they are just too expensive for me.
I found a GE top loader at Lowes. It has an agitator. It is the same price as the Maytag but then $200 off because it was on clearance. The reviews said this washing machine is noisy, but aren't they all? There was a couple buying the GE. The guy said, "I can put my clothes in the sink and poke a stick in it and get the same result as the non-agitator machines. We are buying a machine with the agitator.” Best Buy used to sell the GE but they don't have any left.
I would like to buy at Best Buy because my son-in-law is employed at the corporate office. I try to support them whenever I can. But If I have to buy a washer somewhere else I guess I will.
Right now I am washing clothes at my daughter's, a friend's, and the laundromat. I have to decide something soon!

We have the Amanda washer. Nothing fancy top loader works excellent. Go take a look.

There was a recent thread about washers that you should read: Goodbye HE Washer, Hello Speed Queen. I believe it was mentioned in that thread that new top loaders sold by chains must lock the lid so you can’t add anything or check to see if you did indeed put in the detergent, but smaller stores can sell those with lids that can be opened in old fashion.
I like my agitator washers. I’ve always had good results with them. I’ve had three different brands in sixty years and they all worked. My current Kenmore isn’t new enough for the model to be relevant but it says “90 Series, Heavy Duty, Super Capacity Plus (which is very handy), Quiet Pak II.” It has regular knobs, not push buttons (which sound like they’d wear out sooner). I like that it has a true delicate agitation as well as normal and heavy duty (as opposed to one that says those things but is just you setting to shorter or longer regular wash).

Yes, definitely agitator. After using a fancy-schmancy water-saving European front loader for a few years (not my choice, it came with the military base housing), I was determined to get a top loader that doesn’t lock. So my trip to Sears went like this:
Me: Can you please show me your dumbest washer?
Sears guy: That would be this one but ma’am, the lid on it doesn’t lock and it doesn’t have any bells and whistles.
Me: Perfect, thank you, I’ll take it and the matching dryer.
I’ve been super happy with them both. These machines do what I tell them (via knobs) and nothing else. They do not make any decisions for me or refuse to move because the load isn’t evenly distributed or somesuch BS common to fancy machines. They are GE and were about $700 for the set three years ago. I love them.
Edited to add picture.

People on the Houzz laundry forum seem to prefer agitators.

Yes, I did read that thread as I mentioned in my OP. I just didn't get a "feel" for what I should buy.

We have a high efficiency top loader (Maytag) and I’ve been really happy with it. It does not have an agitator. I’ve never had issues with clothes not getting clean, although I generally include an extra rinse when washing dark clothes.
I wash comforters in it and they come clean so for me the lack of an agitator has made no difference.

Don’t get the GE from Lowes! I did, and since it is still HE , though it does have an agitator, there is practically no water in the tub, except on deep fill option on a couple of the cycles. I hate it. It is loud, and screechy. I have to pretty much wash small loads on bulky load cycle. Plus, i tend to separate things into small loads by type, fabric, and color anyway, ( never stuff the machine with all things like my relatives do😬) and I still have to wash things twice to get the soap and dirt out. I’m using it only cause I don’t know what to get now that the new efficient Speed Queens seem to not get the best reviews anymore.

My sister has a neighbor who still has her old wringer washer in the basement...she loves it, and it is the only thing that she says does not ruin things. (has just turned 90)
I told my sister that in her will, I want that washer!...and she said, get to the back of the long line, and laughed.
