Do we have a Thread on this here?
The new research docs on Gut Health are showing up on shows like Dr. Oz, plus videos that take too long to get to the point, selling us more superfoods/vitamins. Seems as we mature we can't eat everything any more! Foods like cauli, cabbage etc. have been known, what else have you discovered? No IBS among us, just a matter of wanting more energy/sleep/less bloating. We got the book "Happy Gut" by Pedre at library, it turned out more medical/scientific study than we have time or interest for. Eating did not used to be such a chore.....

I have had IBS for years but it got worse as I got over 70. Stress is the main culprit. However I got desperate this year because things went very south in Jan and Feb. I looked up the FODMOPS diet and started following it for three weeks. Things went much calmer. Then I started adding back certain foods to see what I could eat without trouble. I’m doing very well for the first time in years. Oddly enough, too much fiber was the problem!

A dietician had me do the FODMAP elimination diet last year. Oh what a difference, I know know more of my food triggers. But like you Gretchen, stress is the biggest trigger.

I was 100% gluten free for 5 years starting 9 years ago. I slowly added gluten containing foods back into my diet and now have a very good idea of how much I can tolerate before things go south.

FODMAPs that are triggers for me:
Cauliflower, oh how much I love this veggie
Brussels Sprouts, I hated these as a child, then discovered roasting them, not more than 1/2 a small one is a trigger
Tomato Sauces, spaghetti, salsa etc. Too much has me running to the toilet.

Dairy I knew already. I do love cheese and mostly tolerate older firm cheeses, plus goat and Ewe's milk cheeses.

Fresh Fruit, I love fruit, it makes me belch. When I told the dietician about my reactions to fresh apples, she suggested doing FODMAP as my reaction was classic. Cooked fruit is not as bad. I still eat fruit, but generally not in public and although Blackberries are supposed to be a no go for me, I love them and have frozen ones on my granola most mornings.

Hello fellow fodmap friends! Monash University in Australia actively studies this IBS issue. Monash U developed an app which I downloaded to my phone or ipad. It helps me to remember what foods are ok and in what amounts.
Staples in my diet are chia pudding made with hemp milk; home made yeasted toaster waffles; home made English muffins. I found my gut appreciates a yeasted bread, but store bought has too many suspicious products, so I make my own. I eat chia pudding every morning with either oatmeal or on home made toaster waffles.

Overnight Yeasted Waffles

There is much we do not know about gut-brain connections. A recent study shows a connection between gut health and Parkinson’s. Another study shows a connection between gut health and children with autism. The vagus nerve travels from gut to brain. I know that cannabis is used for neuropathy. I started using it to treat my IBS, to address nerve damage in my gut. It works. I’m in a state where it’s legal, than goodness for that. I use a mix of CBD and THC on a one to one ratio.

Yogurt seems to be a problem for me. Apples are said to have a lot of fiber, so
I have gone to chunky applesauce every once in a while instead of the raw thing. I also stopped oatmeal, haven’t tried it back yet. Best is no sharp, doubling over cramps!

I found that egg yolks unless well cooked cause problems, also olive oil, apples, sauces with vinegar in them, ( acetic acid? ) raw onion, broccoli, and unsoaked oatmeal (porridge) was a nightmare.
Now, if I make the porridge the night before, and leave it in the fridge, I have no more pain. Yoghurt has to be plain, live. Excess sugar and too much fibre is a trigger too, and don’t mention stress😱😱

Another long term IBS sufferer, like most of my life. 40 odd years ago, doctors gave gastrointestinal problems that could not be solved, the Umbrella name IBS. I realised that some foods were causing me to feel so unwell and restricted many.
I was also a test patient at the Gastro unit at my nearby hospital.
Q
I was delighted when Monash Uni published FODMAP research, many of the foods in some lists were the very foods I had eliminated for many years.
Unfortunately, my daily foods are restricted to the FODMAP green light foods. Food stores in Australia are now beginning to stock condiments like onion and garlic free stock cubes and garlic infused olive oils. I believe their are more products available in the US.
I rarely eat out because of food restrictions and prepare meals from fresh foods. Thank heavens for rice !!!

They're banning all our favorites and giving us pricey plants sourced from rare soil in remote mountains? Eating should not be a chore...

I’ll do almost anything not to go back to my previous situation. Mine started in my late 30’s and was very infrequent, I knew I had 5 minutes to find a bathroom. It went away for decades, but retirement, read DH, has made it a weekly thing. Then it was daily.

I find that DH has to eat every two hours (he gains no weight). If I eat that frequently, it doesn’t matter what I eat, my body doesn’t like it. Could it be the timing of meals has added a new stress?
