I'm working on my umpteenth version of B5997, and in my enthusiasm for how beautifully the facing turned out, I totally forgot that it's only attached at the V opening--not all the way around the front neckline (to the shoulders). But I sewed it thus, trimmed, and topstitched, and it is *BEAUTIFULLY* finished, so there's no undoing it now.

Here's what it's supposed to look like, with the collar:

Here's my lovely version where I accidentally finished the whole front neckline!

Now, this is not a disaster and would have been EASILY fixable (somehow)... IF I had noticed before serging the front and backs together at the shoulder seams. So now I have an unfinished back neckline serged to a finished front neckline. So... what to do?

I think the answer here is bias binding to finish the back neckline, but what's the best way to handle the intersection at the shoulder seams?

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I would probably do a bias strip "facing" in back, extending an inch or so over the shoulder seam towards the front. It'll be a little extra sturdy over the shoulders, but I bet no one who doesn't sew will notice.

I can easily visualize that--thanks!

I feel half foolish, and half brilliant, because the front is GORGEOUS, and yet, whoops!

I actually like yours without that stand collar better than theirs with it. So, maybe it was ment to be. If you feel that way too now.

It’s pretty. It looks more summery without the collar. It looks like the collar offers some structure: if it’s too floppy you could tack in some ties. Regarding finishing it, it’ll be fine with binding you suggest.

You've already gotten better fixing suggestions than I could come up with, so I only want to say my mantra is: Mistakes are design elements waiting to happen.

I think this whoops was meant to be. When it gets hot and humid you will be glad not to have the collar and maybe make a few more new versions of your favorite pattern :)

Well, the funny thing is that before I decided I wanted to do pintucks with this fabric, I was strongly considering the Love Notions Rhapsody top, which has the open neckline and no collar. And deciding among neckline details was one of the factors I was weighing. Apparently that urge was still in the back of my mind!

The collar really comes out nicely, though--not too high, just a good face-framing detail:

Well, IMO you've just created a new "view" that the patternmakers didn't think to include. I like it without the collar -- I think your new "view" of B5997 looks especially suitable with this light, happy fabric.

Yay!! I really didn't mean to disregard Kay's suggestion , but I came up with a different, easy-peasy solution that worked perfectly: I had added a back yoke + gathered back bodice to this version, so my back neckline had two layers. I carefully trimmed out the top 5/8" of interfacing, then folded the edges in and edgestitched. It's lovely, and continues the edgestitching that's already around the neckline. I just need to hand tack down the serger seam allowances so they don't poke out, but this was a great and easy fix!
