The time has (finally) come for me to buy a new machine. I've been working on my grandmother's old Montgomery Ward machine since I was about 14, and I've gotten used to its quirks and limits. But I burned out the motor on it, and I've got the money for a new machine, so this seems like a good time to invest in something with more features. Here's the twist: I'm moving to Germany later this year, and expect to be there for at least 3 years. So any machine that comes with service from a local repair shop is not of much use to me. I plan to have this machine for a good long time, so I'm willing to lay out some $$ for it, but I don't want to find that I've acquired something that will require frequent, and maybe hard-to-find, repairs.

The features I'd most like are:
free arm
needle stop up/down
walking foot
good one-step buttonholer
ability to stitch letters

Oh, and we'll have 110 power while overseas, so that's not a concern.

Any recommendations?

Well, the Pfaffs are German machines, although made in Czech Republic so you would most likely find these dealers on the local economy. I am sure that Vikings must be sold in Germany as well, Berninas too....don't know about support for them. You might check for members living in Germany and find out what they have to say about availability of dealers of other than Pfaffs.
Lucky you...sussing out all those European fabric stores!!
