I have gone round and round searching for an answer but ultimately at a loss here.

I’ve found a recipe for Liege (Belgium) Rice Pudding Tart. HERE is the recipe. It calls for half a sachet of vanilla sugar. ?? How many grams or ounces is this? Does anyone know? My dh has enjoyed this tart on business trips in the past and still speaks fondly of it. Though the ones he had were smaller, one person size. Still it would be such a treat for him. When I showed him the photo of the recipe his face lit up. I would love to make it for him, but that vanilla sugar amount has me truly confused. Any help is much appreciated.

One bag of vanillesuiker ( vanillesuiker sugar) contains 8 gram. Brand dr oetker.
I would use 8 gram.

I found this German vanilla sugar on Amazon. These sachets are 8 grams each. Maybe same/similar to what they get in Belgium?

You can make your own vanilla sugar with regular sugar and a vanilla pod. It would be easier and cheaper, though, to just add vanilla extract to the recipe.

1 tsp white sugar = 4.2 grams, fwiw.

I learned to make a number of recipes from a German friend, and she told me a couple of things: a) Vanilla extract was rare over there, you used vanilla sugar instead, and here she used 1 tsp vanilla extract in place of a packet of vanilla sugar for most uses. b) There were two versions of vanilla sugar: Vanillezucker which was naturally flavored with vanilla pods, and Vanillinzucker, using synthetic vanilla to flavor the sugar. E vs IN before the "zucker".

I substitute 1 tsp. pure vanilla for one package of Dr. Oetker vanilla sugar in German language recipes. I used to make my own vanilla sugar with vanilla bean in a small glass jar.

Like TeeGee, I substitute 1 tsp vanilla extract for 1 envelope (sachet) of Dr. Oetker vanilla sugar.

Available online in the US via Walmart.com or via Cost Plus World Market. Although, at my request, my local grocer stocks this product. Maybe if you bring in the photo, you can find a grocer who will be willing to order it. In my city (Chicago), the artificial flavored vanilla sugar is pretty easy to find in Eastern European delis. The natural flavor vanilla sugar is much harder to find.

That's what I want to write. There is "vanilla sugar" aka sugar with real vanilla and it's weight is usually 8 g (the name of natural vanilla compound is methylvanilin) . And there is vanilin sugar flavoured with compound similar to natural vanilla (ethylvanilin) but cheap to produce and the sachet of it weights 20 g.

agree with Tee Gee.

just use one tsp. vanilla extract as an equivilent for a package of vanilla sugar. there is not enough sugar in the packet that you need to worry about it.

you can also easily make your own vanilla sugar. or make your own vanilla extract: vanilla bean soaked in vodka and let it sit for about a week.
