We are looking at the iPhone SE since Apple is not supporting updates to our old phones. We pretty much stay all Apple within the family and do a lot of passing back and forth. I like the convenience of handling contacts through one system and we rely on Facetime fir international visits and grandson playtime.

If grandson lived nearby or we had any fantastic travel plans I would investigate other models for maximizing photo and video opportunities.

I haven't been impressed with the recent refurbished listings on the Apple website, typically that improves after buying events that bring in trade ins - after Christmas, after graduation present time, etc.

We buy refurbished whenever possible but hubs wants to stay with a smaller size and, with his hearing challenges, we want to jump his upgrade a few generations to help with hearing and to interface with the next hearing aid purchase.

The closest Apple store is just not great and always offers nothing by way of customer service. A 30 minute drive to the big Apple store in town always yields great customer service and they help maximize our dollars. Some 'repairs' magically become less expensive replacements (or vice versa) when I lay it out for them that the savings will be applied to a purchase in the same visit. This has been a big dollar saver as we have had multiple cracked screen devices passed down to us by the younger generation. Some of those have been replaced at the battery replacement exchange rate when I suggest they test the batteries. The 'big' store goes out of their way to troubleshoot, solve problems, and make us happy.

If you have photos and/or videos on the current phone, and they are saved in the Apple cloud, you might want to stay with an iPhone.

I must confess I don't know how to use all of the programmes.
I use email and internet only. My DIL tells me to get What's App. I would like to look into that. I have a cracked screen on my current phone.

I have an iphone 6 Plus that I thought I wanted to replace. I went to Apple with my mom (during Covid - since she NEEDED a phone.)

Mom got the new SE & I kept my 6Plus. At that time, Apple only offered $40 for my old phone. And, well, it still does what I need it to do -- answer/make calls, take a few pics, check email and some surfing occasionally when waiting for something.

My mom likes the new SE. The actual screen space is the same as my 6 Plus. I liked the larger phone when it came out but now there are smaller versions that have the same space.

She also WANTED the phone with the button on the bottom. The SE is the only new Apple that has that. I prefer the button too. Were I to switch phones, I'd go with the SE.

There are only a few choices for Apple phones. You can go to the store and look at each model & talk to a 20-something geek to get all your questions answered.

My 3 kids have a 7, 8 & 10. To me, they all do the same thing. The newer phones have a better camera and supposedly a better battery life. My kids do everything online, so speed is important to them, the ability to use their phone as a tv and music, music, music. My kids are nimble with their thumbs.

I prefer to use my laptop for most stuff. The phone is ancillary.

BTW: if you get one of these new technologically advanced hand-held computer/phones, make sure you have a young person nearby to set it up for you and demonstrate stuff. My mom had my kids do that. It helped.

I recently got the SE and it is fine for me. I have a love/hate relationship (mostly hate ) with computers but this one is not so terribly different from my older one. I only replace when I absolutely can't put it off any more. The SE is a really good deal.

My work phone is 4 1/2 years old. It’s an Apple 6+ If you don’t use all the apps then maybe consider keeping it. You could just have the screen repaired.

My husband just got a an 11 and the camera really is a huge upgrade. That’s not important for everyone.

Thanks
I have had the screen repaired 3 or 4 times at £40 a time. It seems that once the original cover breaks then the replacements soon crack. It is also frustrating that I can't send emails at the moment since a technician had to set this up originally from head office. I can't remember now but a replacement seems to be a good idea
