New Pattern Technology (Moderated by Deepika)
Posted on: 5/13/21 11:59 AM ET
I just stumbled onto augmented reality pattern technology and wondered if anyone else has tried it yet? The basic concept is that you can see the pattern pieces on your phone and can mark the pieces directly on your fabric. I downloaded the app to my phone and there are some free patterns to try it. There are a few designers like Itch to Stitch who have patterns in this format. I am excited to try this out. You can find more information here. The Makerist

Is this another name for projector patterns?
Side note: FYI, in the museum world, this means the physical object in the display has a QR code or whatever format link to extra multimedia content online related to it. So you're looking at a statue and you can access on a device or your own phone to a video on the sculptor or the era or the technique.

This looks more practical and approachable than projector patterns. Much lighter weight hardware requirements and minimal setup. I do wonder how well it works with much larger pattern pieces.
Might be smart to glue some big washers to the bottom of the "anchor" card to keep it and the fabric from sliding around as you trace.
I'd love it if I could use my own pattern outlines with this app. I do a lot of tweaking to adjust fit and grade between sizes in Illustrator but I hate printing and taping the results together.

I noticed this on Makerist just a few minutes ago. First I have heard of it.

Oh, my. I just watched their 9 minute instructional video and doubt it will be a hit in my sewing life. Anchoring a phone, holding it steady and hand tracing pattern lines to match a projected image don't sound easy, and I doubt that I could trace with the same accuracy that I can cut. Thank you for posting this, though - it was interesting seeing what is being offered.

Well, that is different. And it might work for craft patterns but I don't know how anyone could hold their phone steady enough to make sure a grainline was on the grain of the fabric for a garment. And if you're doing a larger piece and get interrupted how do you go back to the exact placement from before.
I think that video leaves me with more questions than answers. I think I'll stick with my existing paper patterns.

You don't have to hold your phone steady. The phone acts like a window through which you can see the line's position on your fabric, as if it were positioned there in real life and you were moving a camera around it. Positioning the patterned "anchor" square you print out is what aligns the shape to the fabric. The app calculates the correct position and sizing based on how the anchor appears on camera.

Are you speaking from experience?
Sounds interesting.

I watched this yesterday and my first thought was how do you grade out to another size if you need more room in an area. They seem to only project one size. I thought it looked awkward.
Maybe with time development will improve the original idea, but for now I am going to stick with the PDFs even though I am not fond of all of that taping and tracing.
It is interesting that Itch to Stitch has jumped on this early since her patterns are one of the easiest patterns to tape.

I tried it out with the bag pattern and it worked pretty well. The next time I will set my phone up on a tripod so I can have both hands free to trace the pattern. Definitely will take some practice, but a fun new technology to play with. I haven't jumped on the projector bandwagon yet.
