lining them up (Moderated by EleanorSews)
Posted on: 1/24/06 8:32 AM ET
This is so basic I'm ashamed to post.
I've got the hang of making bound buttonholes. Where I mess up everytime is in thinking I have them lined up only to find I'm slightly off centre when i finish.
Anyone got a solution for this dimwit please?

The queen of velcro - still can't do buttonholes

Machine baste down the vertical line of where your buttonholes are centered and vertical lines where they end, in other words three vertical stitching lines with contrasting thread. Then baste the horizontal center of each buttonhole.
Basted markings are straighter and truer than drawn ones as they don't distort the fabric or rely on your hands and a ruler to be precise.
Are you using a firm enough interfacing to hold everything stable as you work?

Thanks for the tip - machine basting! Doh! - never thought of that.
Using my soft interfacing - I'll fuse on some firmer stuff on the buttonhole area.
Thank you - I was getting v frustrated. Spent lots of time lining up only for them to come out wonky, and there are only so many things I can make that close with poppers

I forgot to mention practice, practice, practice. Make an entire row of them to match your garment and practice getting them lined up. You could use a couple of different stabilizers to see which works best.

And use the interfacing grainline the same as the opening of the bound buttonhole.
