Timing problem? Tension problem? Something else? (Moderated by Sharon1952, EleanorSews)

Hello, everyone,
I'm breaking in my new machine (Bernette 77), and I can see from my own tests and from the sample that was under the presser foot when it came from the factory that, with zigzags and satin stitches, the bobbin thread is not centred. It's off to one side (the left, looking at the fabric from above). Increasing the upper tension lets the column of bobbin thread widen toward the right. It doesn't move any further left.
Is that a timing problem? Or is that a tension issue?
In case it's pertinent, I've observed that on straight stitches and narrow zigzags, using the default thread tension settings, the upper thread is not getting pulled up into the fabric. I have to turn up the tension to make the stitch look normal.
I am going to contact the dealer, but I'd like to know what this might be. The dealer doesn't have an in-house technician.

On some modern SMs a little top thread pulled to underside is ok and even desired when using zig-zag stitches. Check your manual and see what shows for proper zig-zag stitch formation.

It's just that there's more pulled down along the right side than on the left.

It's probably a balance issue. I would call my dealer as soon as possible. As much as I like to tinker, I don't tinker with brand new sewing machines, it might void the warranty.
I'm not familiar with your sewing machine. I can adjust the balance on my 1986 Janome Memory Craft myself.

It looks like page 52 of the B77 owners manual discusses correcting stitch balance.

In the online manual I looked at correcting the balance is on page 61.
Different fabrics, threads and stabilizers can affect the programmed stitch patterns so they cannot be sewn out correctly.
It seems the balance can only be corrected lengthwise.
The OP mentioned the zigzag stitches on the stitch sample under the presser foot don't look right on one side either. I would call my dealer as soon as possible.

Balance is a correction for a feeding problem on stitches that have a forward/reverse component, like stretch and decorative stitches. It allows you to equalize the length on both components, so they look right. There is no connection with tension.
It is not unusual for zig-zag stitches not to be corner to corner on the underside of the fabric with drop-in bobbin machines. However if your tension is not right on straight stitch, I recommend taking the machine in for tweaking. Please remember to take along your samples and the thread you were using. It will help.
