Hi there,
I'm new to the site but could really do with some advice on how to sew rayon (bamboo rayon 95%, Spandex 5%) to polar fleece.
I'm making a bib and love the softness and moisture wicking abilities of bamboo rayon, with the polar fleece on the back, but need some advice on the best way to hem it. When I tried, the bib curled upwards at the edges.
Thanks in advance!

I assume you are using a regular sewing machine and not a serger/overlocker? On a regular sewing machine, try a twin needle on a very narrow long zig zag.

Cheers!

Before you go straight to making the bib play around with different techniques on scraps of your fabrics so you don’t need to do tons of ripping when things don’t work well. It’s easy to say but we all often skip that step.

I’m wondering if your two fabrics have the same amount of stretch or if one fabric was stretched a bit while you were cutting it out and relaxed back to a slightly smaller size after it was stitched so the bib is curling toward the smaller fabric. Even something as simple as a line of topstitching around the edge of the bib might be enough to eliminate the curling and keep excess fabric from making the edges curl.

It might help to see a picture of the bib. I’m assuming it’s made of two identical pieces of fabric sew together around the outer edge, turned right sides out with some kind of neck binding and fasteners.

Assuming your "bamboo rayon spandex" is a knit, it's unlikely to fray, so you actually don't need a hem-- another way to approach the issue..

Since the fleece has no wicking attributes and is quite warm against the skin, does it even matter about the bamboo?

They are odd fabrics to sew together, so most people probably would not do that. Bamboo rayon spandex is a lot thinner, more lightweight and a lot more stretchy than Polar fleece. So that is probably why it happened. I guess if you already did it and you don't want to take it out, and if it was a bib you sewed right sides together and then turned inside out afterwards, maybe you can just topstitch around the outside of it afterwards and that might make it lay a little flatter. Also if you decide to iron itat all (I would not) make sure not to iron it on the polar fleece side, as that can melt.

Thanks, that's all great advice. I'm thinking to change the back to bamboo towelling fabric instead of fleece to use less plastic. I've found a bib stitching these 2 materials together but not sure how they've done it. Does anyone have any ideas on how they've hemmed this and what stitching has been used in the picture through the link?
