I'm going to try some buttonholes with my mechanical machine. I thought I'd try some embrodiery thread for a nice sateen look.

Should I use the embrodiery thread in the bobbin too? or something else?

I use regular embroidery thread in my bobbin for buttonholes made with embroidery thread. With machine embroidery, I usually have top tension looser so top thread pulls to the back side a little and satin stitches look nicer. With buttonholes, however, I need strong stitches, and having loose top tension weakens the stitches. You know how sometimes you can just pull the bottom thread out if the top tension is too loose. Anyhow, I like the stitches well balanced for buttonholes. If you balance the stitches and use bobbin thread or regular thread in the bobbin, there is a good chance it’ll be peaking into the right side – just a little, but enough for buttonholes to look sloppy. Also, you might be able to see the underside of buttonhole through the cut in the middle.

I used poly and silk embroidery threads for buttonholes, and don’t remember having problems with popping stitches.
