I was looking at a German website and they have some beautifully interesting, avant garde knit. The even had some knit that was called Dali, with some crazy sketches from Dali in a bright colored random pattern. *I am soon to have a baby* Both DH and I are artists and the baby would be so darn cute in something like that. I want it but it is so expensive and it would be even more expensive to be shipped from so far away, and we live on the artists budget. I know there are groups out there that buy in bulk but it just is still too much for a baby outfit. Oh if I could only go to NYC every week to have a pick at some great fabric, but even then it is a game to find somethings there. Sorry I am just whining DH and I need to move to Europe, we both have eclectic taste that is definitely hard to find in the Midwest where people think that ordering Chinese is stepping outside of the box. Thanks for letting me vent.

Which website was it? I would want to see what it is like. It sounds amazing! Often times I have wanted some really unusual looking fabrics that I could never find. Maybe one of the Euro Pr folks would be willing to help us both out!

Gosh, I so often feel like I have to restrain myself from buying all of the unusual fabric I find on the internet!

AnneM started a fabric website thread sometime ago. You might want to search for it and check out some of those online suppliers.

Hi Val

First of all congratulations about your baby .

Val the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, fabric in Europe is SO expensive and there is a pitifully small choice, especially in knits. I long to live somewhere that fabric is affordable without selling the kids into slavery (joke). Went to NY last year for my 40th, thanks to my understanding DH and had a wonderful time shopping fabric.

Many US suppliers, such as FabricMart, will not ship to the UK at all. Have you looked at Emmaonesock's site? She does lovely knits and is very helpful and prompt to deal with. I don't remember seeing much that is small-scale enough to be baby lately, but if you ask her she will, I'm sure, be gald to help.

OTOH, if nothing but Dali will do, PM me and you can ship it to me in the UK and I will send it on to you. The amonut you'll want for rompers won't be too expensive, you could Paypal me the postage or maybe you could post something to me that I can't get shipped to the UK...

Feel free to pout, but the Dali is not impossible!

I agree with this statement. The grass is so green on the other side. As a Dutch immigrant to NZ I always feel torn. I love NZ but get homesick to Europe. When in Europe, I start to get homesick to NZ.

Living Down Under has made me see the advantage of internet shopping. Postage is usually not that bad for light items like fabric. I would suggest if the retailer is willing to post it to you that the postage is not why you should not buy it.

On my trips to Europe and during my youth growing up there, I have found the most amazing fabrics and great quality, yet they are sooo expensive that it becomes prohibitive. When in Europe for 6 months last year the only fabric I bought was for curtains in our campervan. Very nice but pricey and that that was on special. And don't forget that in Europe most patterns are much more expensive. Karin (I thnk) pointed out that most patterns are never on sale in Sweden.

Here in NZ I am blessed with a good choice (that is Auckland, smaller towns are harder) with a range between cheap to very expensive and the same with quality, but a lot of other things like haberdashy can be hard to find and comparatively expensive. My personal itch is buttons and closures. Can't find any I like. I hope to find some at out PR weekend Down Under in Melbourne, Australia in May. As you can see for a PR weekend I need to go overseas

Every place has it's pro and con side, but in this day and age with internet shopping you can take advantage of what the world has to offer. The price you pay may be slightly more than at home, but it means you have what you want from anywhere, Isn't that amazing?

Some great looking fabrics there. What a pity they don't ship to Australia. On the other hand better for my bank balance that they don't.

A room of my own, at last.
