I am reworking a 1948 Singer 201-2 potted motor. When the motor was dismantled I found grease in the the brush ports. So the armature is covered in grease - the windings, the commutator and the brushes.

I have read that shellac was used as insulation on some early windings which limits the cleaners that can be used. Does anyone have direct experience with this issue? How to clean the brushes too? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There are spray electronics cleaners on parts shelves in auto parts stores, home improvement stores, and so on that should work well.

I restored and rewired a 201-2 potted motor about 3 years ago. I used only isopropyl alcohol for cleaning everything in the motor before reassembling.
