Is heat the answer? (Moderated by Deepika)

I'm making infant burial gowns from wedding dresses. I have a large piece of material that has various lace motifs glued on to tulle fabric. I want to harvest the lace motifs; tugging gently is working pretty well but not everywhere.
How can I get the motifs off? Hairdryer heat? Or will this make a big mess?

You can probably cut them off, being careful not to cut into the motif. The tulle should not add any weight . I have bought fabric just to cut out the lace/sequin motifs for costumes, etc.
If the glue is too stiff for the motifs to be useful after they are cut out, you may have to try various methods, like the ones you mentioned. Don’t forget to try soaking in warmish water. I have no idea if this would work, but you might try soaking them in water with fabric softener. Back in the day when I was doing a lot of DIY, fabric softener + water was a good way to remove wallpaper and its glue. 🤷♀️

Never knew about the fabric softener and water trick. I'll start with warm water only first and see how that goes.

Anytime I need any sort of adhesive removed I use DeSolvit. It is good for stickers, any grease etc. my latest use is softening caulk for removal. I would give it a try on a small spot. Be sure and let it sit for a few minutes to really do its job. It does have a weird smell that would need to be washed out. They have a version specifically for laundry, but I have never tried it.

Good ideas already given here. Also ... Have you tried steaming, with your iron, to loosen the glue?

Goo Gone might work I buy it at my Home Hardware store, I use it to remove glue from stickers on products I buy.
follow directions on bottle.

If you think it's crazy glue, then acetone or nail polish on q-tip probably would remove/soften that. As those do remove crazy glue from your fingernails even. But, if so, I would wash it out with soap and water real good afterwards. And you should not put stuff with acetone or nail polish remover on it, in a clothes dryer either, as it's very flammable and might/will catch on fire even. But also, if the lace appliques were polyester themselves, the acetone/nail polish remover might be able to melt though them too even. I don't know.

Thanks for all the great ideas. Happy to report I was able to remove the motifs by holding the fabric under warm water. I was amazed because the glue was really thick, but the water worked. I'm thrilled because the motifs will look great on the baby gowns.

Thank you for the follow-up.
Last year, I dug out my old wedding dress to donate for resale, but there is some yellowing where the plastic "window" had contact with the bodice the past 45+ years. I considered washing it first, to see what happens, but now I know the lace might come unglued. This is good to know.
