This makes me really sad. I've been shopping there since I was a teen and I'm 65 now. I know they weren't perfect but the store near me was a super store they opened about 20 years ago and have been a very nice store. If they are forced to liquidate and close I will really miss them. I went in my store this morning and it was packed so I don't know what they say about people not sewing anymore. That cutting counter is usually crowded when I'm there. And the store is always steady. I hate to think I will have to resort to shopping at Hobby Lobby which is not that close and I hate what they stand for.

Then there are plenty of us who love what they stand for.

Yeah. I'd rather have the Joanns than the Hobby Lobbys. For what you mentioned and more. A Hobby Lobby opened a couple hours travel from me and I was shocked because I expected sewing and crafts. But no. Almost zero sewing stuff. No patterns. Very little fabric. Very little needlework. No fun stuff like puzzles. They had some "crafts" like - Glue-These-Foam-Pieces-Together. But mostly they had junky furniture and home decor. I couldn't even buy hand needles there. And the Hobby Lobby had a humonguous building all to itself. I expected, you know, HOBBIES. At least if I travel to a Joanns I'll find something useful. I don't want them to close their stores. There IS nothing else. We have 2 Michaels, but they don't sell fabric or patterns.

My husband shared that joanns will be liquidating it all.
Beware that if they consign the liquidation, until it is last in liquidation, it starts at low "off percent' current sales are likely better.

I’ll be sorry to see the one in my area close, I like the people who work there, and even though I’m kind of picky about the fabric I buy there, if I look around I can always find some good stuff. Plus I have bought a lot of thread from the store too.

My husband and I are former employees. He worked at the headquarters on POS systems. I was a sales associate at my locak store in my late teens. At that time, JoAnns focused on Home Ec students and special occasion garments.

I thought it was a smart move for them to acquire a craft chain and combine the two. I thought it was smart when they partnered with Singer and sold machines in store.

I bought the only pair of custom drapes I will ever buy from my local JoAnn. IIRC, not long after, they discontinued offering custom made. I don't know why the partnership between JoAnn and the local maker ended.

I know Cargo Express turned into a big fiasco for them, but I'm not sure why. Pier One, World Market, and similar places are still around.

Everybody pulled out their old sewing machines and started making masks during the pandemic. Everybody else spent time on their hobbies. But of course that unexpected bubble shrank when lockdowns ended (less time for those hobbies) and collapse completely when demand for masks ceased. JoAnns is not the only company struggling five years after the pandemic impact. But JoAnns primary inventory got an extra whallop of suddend super high demand followed by a quick dramatic drop.

In my area a lot of smaller specialty stores were closing before the pandemic, the lockdowns sealed the fate of many more. Maybe things will reverse in the future, but I don't see that happening. It's just too easy to scroll and click and have something delivered.

There are several online stores where they won't send swatches, 2 I have used, the 3rd nope, too expensive to make a mistake by not having a sample touch/feel/stretch/put in different lighting/match to other items.
Joann's missed the boat on online, when they kept sending 1 yard pieces instead of a continual cut. Also having to order extra because they would not cut on grain, period....no matter how much you explained it is not a full yard.
The best part of Joann is that they had a pretty large amount of notions, and some minimal amount of good apparel fabric that you could see and touch.
Likely one of jobbers these will pick up the lot,
but the down side for them is their quality will drop pretty low overall.

I have to wonder where will all of those unknown people, who bought all of that cheap fleece, shop.

I live in central Virginia and I was always totally puzzled about who purchased all of the fleece crowding the aisles of my Joann's.

If they go out of business that will leave only Holly Lobby, Walmart, a few quilting stores and some very expensive small fabric stores left. That really is sad. I have resigned myself to Internet shopping. I guess the good news is that I will no longer be adding to my stash and will have a plan for any fabric purchase in the future.

There's no JoAnn in NYC, where I live; but I'm in the Kingston, NY area several times a year and am familiar with the store there. I've always found it to be clean, well organized, and well stocked. Staff members are consistently pleasant and helpful, and there seems to be a steady stream of customers. I'd be very sorry to see it go.
