I searched here, I searched there, I searched everywhere. All I come up with are things made from plated jersey but no indication of what it is. Fabricline.com has some and I just was curious about what it is (like, what makes it "plated"?).

Are you sure it's not a typo for 'pleated' jersey?

Beangirl,
I don't know if this would be the case for plated jersey, but I machine knit and plated fabric can be knitted. Basically you knit with 2 different coloured yarns and one yarns is threaded through a plateing feeder and the result is a fabric which is a diferent colour on each side with a hint of the other colour showing through.

aha! that might be it. There were all sorts of sports RTW listing "plated fabric" so I didnt think it was a typo. But they didn't say what it was and fabricline didn't either. Thanks!

(I hate it when I can't find out something that I'm trying to look up.)

it's PLAITED!!!

If you google 'plaited jersey' there are lots of hits. Plaited: Main Entry: 2plait
Function: transitive verb
1 : PLEAT 1
2 a : to interweave the strands or locks of : BRAID b : to make by plaiting
- plait·er noun

When I look at the descriptions of stuff that's 'plaited' they seem to be a blend of threads, like poly, cotton and lycra. Or it could be a type of interlock.

LOL I didn't really want any, I just hadn't ever heard of it and I wondered what it might be (and what made it specificially "plated").

I should have thought of "plaited"! (Which I think in England, Australia and- apparently, based on experience with my South African friends- South Africa, would be pronounced "platted", so that will be really confusing if you were looking for something rhyming with "plate"). How funny.

Plated knit just means that 2 different yarns are used in the knitting process. If you run them both thru the needle at the same time, sometimes on is up and one is down, and it gives an uneven coloration due to the 2 different fibers. If a knit is plated, one yarn is forced to the top everytime, so the face has a unified look. This is often used with a rayon or shiny yarn plated to the top, so the face is shiny but the underside is not.
