I am about to start work (under guidance) on the muslin of my Hot Patterns Hippy Chick Dress to steal this look:
Karen
Zambos Kimono Dress
The shopbop description simply says "rayon". What would you call this fabric, exactly? It looks like it is sort of like a dupioni-ish slub thing is going on -- or do you think those streaks are something else?
Seen anything like it out there?

Erm, after a long search for semi sheer curtains in a sort of denim blue natural fiber I found something cheap, cheap, cheap online that looks a lot like that.
Seriously, don't overlook things like curtains and tablecloths as fabric sources. I have a shower curtain that is multi shades of blue done in a kind of ikat dye pattern. If it shrinks again in the next wash it will have to become yardage. I think it would make a nice jacket. Places like Ross, Marshall's, TJMaxx all tend to have single odd curtains that provide enough fabric for a dress or could go in a room with one window. Just wash the hell out of it first to make sure it doesn't disintegrate or shrink down into a valance.

It's pretty sheer, whatever it is. But it doesn't appear to have much sheen. I agree, home dec is a good place to look--maybe curtain remnants?

It looks like rayon gauze to me. You could try something cheap like this from FFC for the muslin: rayon gauze.
I have some rayon gauze from Textile Studios that is too gorgeous. Yummy! I need to order the cheap stuff from FFC for a muslin myself.
I don't know about Joann's but that might be a place to look. I found some jacquard in the home dec remnant section which was surprisingly exactly what I have had an eye out for. Never know. Oh, and I edited to add that it had some dirt on the selvage and the lady at the cutting table "suggested" I ask for a discount. I ended up with 3 yards for 1.50 per yard! Wahoo!!

If you have a Hancock Fabrics near you, check out their quilting section. There is a line of fabric that they carry that is cotton and has a sheen exactly like this. I used it for the lining and bias binding and it's great to work with. I can't remember how much it cost, but they have a 40% off coupon that you can use today which definately helps!
eta I used it for lining and bias binding of my Wapture Jacket - you can see a picture of it (very shiny) here

When I first looked at it, I thought maybe a leno linen, maybe even a leno linen gazar. Lenos
There are a couple of very nice leno silks, too.
Then a georgette for the trim.

That Tencel gauze is nice and comfortable to wear, too, and doesn't wrinkle as badly as some rayons. It breathes very well. I have a bunch of it from a few years ago but not a solid--the seersucker stripe.

What about something like a rayon georgette? Semisheer, drapes beautifully, and isn't too expensive: rayon georgette
