In the midwest, we observe this rule. But what about Hilton Head on the beach in South Carolina?

My personal opinion is that it's just fine. It's so close to Memorial Day that no one will notice - for those that even know the "rule". Plus, I usually replace "memorial day" with "spring" for my own personal "rules".

Hope that helps.

Here in San Francisco I work in a very posh neighborhood and am already seeing tons of white on The Ladies Who Lunch.

huh... what rule? Please... I wear white when I want to. Who cares. If you feel and look good people will notice anyway -- in a good way!

Call the police there and ask if they have a fashion police squad.

Try to enjoy your vacation without worrying that someone will be scandalized by your wardrobe.

It's something I can't get past either. I have these new white capris and I just can't seem to wear them yet! It could be because the weather has been rather dreary and cooler and I just haven't felt like 'summer' or it could be that old rule!

Anyway- I'd take it on your vacation and wear it. It's vacation.

I always thought the rule was for white shoes, not white clothing. But once I moved to Florida even that went out the window, although I always hear my mother's voice if do wear white shoes (sandals really) before Memorial Day.

Thanks, everybody, for your thoughts and encouragement! My white shoes are now packed, in case I throw caution to the wind!

I've always thought it was a no-no after Labor Day but I've never heard of it being a no-no before Memorial Day. I think I've always gone with "planting time" so that if you can plant you can wear white LOL
