Re: Snap Tape (posted on 5/18/06 6:54 PM ET)
I made some infant clothes for my new born & had a devil of a time putting in the snaps. The first outfit I used individual snaps and sometimes they looked okay, but other times not so much. It was also a challenge using the snap setting cripmper.
On the next outfit I used snap tape. Had a hard time sewing around the snaps.
What's the trick to putting in snap tape?

A zipperfoot helps a lot with edgestitching around the tape edges.Congratulations with your new born.

You can sometimes get snap tape with plastic snaps on it rather than the metal snaps. I found that the plastic ones can melt in the dryer. I used them for my babies and washed in hot water and dried them lots! A few of them actually melted, so I would go for the metal ones instead.

I have to agree with els about using the zipper foot. Although I've never used the tape, here's what I'd do. I'd glue the tape down first, let it dry, and then stitch it. You could use a glue made specifically for fabrics. I'd want to use a glue that wasn't real thick, though. I used it one time when I ran into a problem with trying to sew bias binding. It worked well.
Congratulations on your new baby. Have a great time. They grow up so fast.

I have bought snap tape with metal snaps and will never go back to individual snaps. It is more expensive--but so much easier.

I agree with els use a zipper foot to attach the snaptape. Glue basting it to the fabric with a gluestick is a good idea too. Personally I use to pin the tape to the garment and stitch with a zipperfoot. Then I discovered Snap Source snaps and haven't used snap tape since. I'd highly recommend buying the tool and using their snaps -- they offer a lot of different colors and decorative snaps. The snaps will endure lots of useage.

I used to combine the individual and snap tape methods. On the top layer (the side of the closure that would show), I stitched reinforced bias tape (bias tape with twill tape tucked inside) to the crotch seam allowance, and applied individual snaps to the tape. Then I topstitched the tape in place with a zipper foot. The advantage was that no snaps showed, because in The Olden Days, we couldn't get color-coordinated gripper snaps. On the underlayer, I reinforced the garment along the snap line (twill tape again), put in the other side of the snaps and stitched the bias tape in place over the back of the snaps, again with a zipper foot. That way, the metal snaps didn't irritate my nickel-sensitive son's skin because the bias tape "hid" them.

I agree about the zipper foot for snap tape and also for Snap Source for a great tool and source for snaps. I bought one for my mom but still struggle with the awful chain store device for myself. Dumb.
I have to offer another thought for baby or toddler items....velcro dots. Just sew a straight line of stitching through them in an X fashion. I used a lot of them when DS was young for knit tops. Velcro strips for jeans as they were a breeze over zippers. When I finally got around to buying jeans he kind of fussed.
Just a thought.

I used both snap tape and individual snaps on my sons' baby clothes. I prefer the look of individual snaps, but that's a personal preference, and it pays to get decent snaps. For the snap tape, I agree with those who recommend a zipper foot. I found it was enough to pin the tape on, just put the pins between the snaps. And remember, babies aren't fussy about their clothes, they don't have to be perfect! Enjoy your baby

Re: Snap Tape (posted on 5/19/06 11:49 AM ET)
I was using my zipper foot, but it was getting caught in the ball portion. I just couldn't get the tape out of the way or the foot out of the way enough. I have a simplicity sewing machine and I don't like the zipper foot on it one bit. Any suggestions for a good short-shank zipper foot?
