So, I deconstructed this appliqued vest from the thrift store, and found that the applique has really random backing. Like wrapping paper, chinese newsprint, and mystery paper substances. Each piece has something different on the back:

appliques

the big applique

I'd like to remove the weird backing, but not ruin the appliques. I think I can get the back damp and then peel the paper off without soaking the front, but maybe I should replace the paper with a fusible or something? The animals are fat and heavy and stuffed with something, it is very 3d and not just flat fabric applique, which will make fusing difficult. I do have hair canvas and other sew-in interfacings.

Any advice about removing (or not) the paper backings and replacing them?

Re: Removing stabilizers from embroidery/applique (posted on 5/19/06 1:15 AM ET)
OK. I'm NOT an expert on this. But I don't know that I would try removing the backings. I assume that whoever did that embroidery knew what they were doing; because of this, I also assume that the paper was used for a reason -- even if that reason is only "I need SOMETHING back there and newspaper is a lot cheaper than stabilizer!" And, even if paper shouldn't have been used, it makes me think that the "proper" stabilizer is at least a material very similar to paper.

So, yeah. That's my two cents! What were you planning on using the appliques for? If you don't have a specific use for them now, I'd definitely wait on attempting any removal until you decide that.

I don't think I would wet these things! That newspaper ink may run and ruin them. Maybe start snipping the paper away CAREFULLY with little scissors then tearing gently. I have used tweezers before to "work" small pieces of tearaway from under stitches--this may work for the areas that have the stitching. It will probably be tedious but worth it. Interesting stuff you found there!
