I wanted to let everyone out there that wears contact lenses what has happened to me in the last week.
I fell asleep with my contacts in last Saturday night. Early Sunday morning, I woke up with my right eye watering very bad. I took my lenses out and didn't think anything about it. My eye was a little pink on the bottom part of the white of my eye but other than that nothing major. On Tuesday morning, I drove to town and I could not force my eye to stay open in the sun light, once I got home it was fine. By Tuesday night my eye had swollen up so bad I could not open it and when my DH got home from work around mignight Tues. night, it was hurting very badly. DH took me to the doctor Wed. morning, regular MD thought I had a staph infection in my eye and sent me to the eye doctor. Eye doctor said I have an ulcer in my eye and gave my drops to put in it and to come back on Fri. morning. When I got up Friday morning, I could not see out of my right eye. It was just a big white blob. So eye doctor sent me to an eye specialist in Tyler TX. And he did cultures of my eye and told me if I had waited even until Fri. afternoon to come to see him I probably would have lost my vision in my right eye. He gave me drops to put in my eye every 30 min. around the clock. By yesterday morning I could see some out of it, but it is still very blurry. I went to my local eye doctor yesterday morning again and he said it was looking better, but to come back first thing Monday morning to have it checked again.
I am not looking for sympathy or anything I am just trying to let anyone out there that wears contact lenses to not sleep in them. This is very painful and scary. I do not want anyone else to have to go through what I have been through this last week.
P.S. sorry for any typos, it's kind of hard to see what I am typing.

Oh my gosh - I'm so sorry that you have such terrible problems. I certainly am glad that you are one the road to recovery.
I wore contacts for 17 years and that's when they were these thick glass ones. When Radial Keratotomy came in, early 80's, I had it done. I'm still pretty much okay. I just have to wear glasses for distance and that's an old age thing - hehehe.
Please keep us apprised of your condition. I'm sending big hugs to help you feel better.

Carmen, I am sure this whole thing has been very scary. We really just take for granted our eyesight, y'know?
You didn't mention if you wear hard or soft contacts and I am curious. My adult children wear soft lenses and fall asleep with them in them a lot. I wear hard lenses and I know for sure I cannot fall asleep with them in.
Hope you recover fast!

Carmen,
It's possible that the source of your problem may be your contact lens solution. If the solution you use is Baush & Lomb's RENU, continue reading.
Two weeks ago, my DFIL was visiting and after searching for something in the medicine cabinet, advised me to throw away my RENU. He's had multiple cataract surgeries and wears hard lenses. During his last visit to his specialist, the MD advised him to discontinue use of RENU due to reported instances of it causing serious infections in some persons.
Please realize that I've done no independent searches on the subject, nor verified the truth in any other manner. I merely trashed my RENU, as well as recleaned my stored lenses, as well as the solution in which they were stored, using a different brand.
I do not wish to start any unfounded rumors nor 'badmouth' any product (as I remember well the ill-founded rumor years ago re: FEBREZE claiming it damaged cats, which proved totally false).
If I was not running out of the house in the next 5 minutes, I would do a search for you, in an attempt to verify. As it is, I merely pass this rumor along to you and trust you to exercise your judgment. And of course, if you don't use RENU, please just accept my sympathy for your eye problem.

There was a global recall on it. Below is a link to the FDA release.
renu recall
I wanted to edit this post to add that it appears to be just one type of RENU (with moistureloc).l

Yes, this is a contact lens side effect. I think back in the 80's when they came out with the wear-'em-for-a-month contact lenses, later on I think there were a bunch of corneal ulcer problems.
I am very cautious and do not wear my extended wear when I sleep, nor have I ever done so. Heard about the Renu scare as well.
I've been wearing contacts for almost 30 years and am meticulous with my daily care. My daughter is constantly harrassed by me about proper hygiene and cleanliness in regard to contact lens care. IMO, I don't think she is as cautious and careful as she should be. Since the Renu scare, I boil my case once/week and let my hands air dry after washing them with soap and water before doing my contact stuff, whether it be putting them in or taking them out.
I am so sorry to hear about your troubles. It is good that you posted this. Another warning for my daughter and anyone else that needs to be reminded. I just didn't think it was safe to wear them overnight back in the 80's, nor do I think it's safe now. But that's just my own non-medical opinion. Whether it be fungal infections, corneal ulcers, or something else, it is good to have a reminder about the seriousness of wearing contacts.

There are also many different kinds of contact lenses. My lenses are called night and day. They are intended for the wearer to wear them for 30 days, dispose of them, and then put a new pair in. The FDA has approved these as safe. They are something like 9 times more breathable than the average contact lense and pretty expensive. They may also be used as daily or weekly and be taken out and cleaned. I wear them the 30 days, sometimes taking them out to rinse and then putting them right back in. I love them.

Hi momof2girls,
You have my profound sympathy

As a contact lens wearer for the last 45 years, I sometimes wonder about the safety issue. Without corrective lenses, I am legally blind. And as an artist, my eyesight is my most precious asset.
I have asked two or three eye doctors about the radial eye surgery. All have told me that it would not really improve my sight, and that complications might be harmful - like resulting in blindness. So I am stuck with what I have now. Yes, I do have back-up glasses, but my vision is soooo much better with the contacts! (The glasses are so thick that all lines are curved
)
So ***THANK YOU VERY MUCH*** for this alert. I really appreciate the time you have taken to warn us.
Regards,
Sophiecat

I recently had an eye dr appt and was lamenting the disappearance of solutions from the market, like Aosept. My dr recommends ClearCare but it's hard to find anywhere. I had been using Renu and they told me to stop immediately due to the infection problem. Maybe more and more contact lens wearers are getting surgery because the cleaning solution selection isn't what it used to be.

Gee, I never boiled my case but sounds like a good idea to me. I wear hard contact lenses and I'm always trying to keep them in good shape-the cleaner they are , the better they feel.
