What would be my best bet? (Moderated by Deepika, Sharon1952)

Coming from a town with only a JoAnn's, I and a few friends are off on a scrumptious fabric adventure to SF's legendary Britex store. My problem... I am already having shopping paralysis over the possibilites. I am afraid I will go and come back with nothing.
How would you all approach this? What fabric would you absolutely "go for" given the chance to shop somewhere besides JoAnn's?
I look forward to all you Shopping Diva's ideas. Thanks.

From what others have said, the nasty message came from Fitting Woes, NOT Misc Hot Topics or the Civility thread.

Would it be to bad to just go with the flow? Have an idea of what yardage you need for each item you make ~ like 2 yards of 60" wide fabric for a dress, etc. And then rock it!
As someone who has just recently been to Britex for the first time, I can tell you that there is alot of fabric but the way the store is set up, it is not overwhelming. Well at least it wasn't to me! I didn't need bridal or evening so while it was nice to look at that floor, I wasn't drawn to it.
What is wonderful about Britex is that all of the fabric is displayed in colors. It is really nice to see all of the brown linens together going from lightest hue to darkest. Believe me it makes selecting something so much easier.
Don't stress! This is a wonderful adventure. Enjoy yourself, buy fabric and notions and report back on what you bought!

I went to Britex last summer on vacation. I don't know how much time you have to spend there, but definitely hit the remnants on the top floor. It will take some time to look through them and don't forget the 2nd floor with all of the buttons and trims. First floor is where the expensive stuff is. Fun to look at and pet, but I was not able to afford anything there. They had a bolt of cashmere? or something like that. It was $295.00 a yard! I'm jealous, I want to go back!

I am feeling tons of envy, but wishing you tremendous courage. I have only visited there once, but was so overcome, I did not buy anything. You are so wise to prepare. I hope you get something fabulous!!!!

As a San Franciscan, here is the plan of attack I suggest -- come armed with the actual patterns you want to sew for, rather than just shopping for a stash -- the choices are too vast!
Allow yourself a lot of time, there are floors and floors of gorgeous fabrics that you cannot afford but will enjoy pawing.
If you have time, go to Satin Moon on Clement at 2nd avenue first. They carry many of the same fabrics as Britex and are always cheaper.
Someone told me once that some of the remnants at Britex are not actually marked down! So check those prices carefully.
Have fun!

Satin Moon? I hadn't heard of that one. Thanks for the tip.

And, just to add to the choices, I find that I often buy more fabric at Stone Mountain & Daughter in Berkeley than at Britex! It may be because it is less intimidating.

You didn't say when, but Poppy Fabric in Oakland is celebrating it's 35th birthday with a 20% off sale, ends next Tuesday. TDF and it is within 20 minutes drive of Stonemountain. Both are absolutely worth a journey. However, the trip is hard to make without a car. But if you are a quilter, then just ask for more recommendations. Definitely spend time in Britex, but not after 11 on a Saturday. Kaaren

Hi mrspenguin,
Color me GREEN with envy!!
I have dreamed about going to Britex for years. The last few times I was in San Francisco I was with someone else who was driving, and not interested in fabrics.
Anyway, have a marvelous time, and don't anticipate failure.....like the others replying have said, give yourself plenty of time, and ENJOY!!
Regards,
Sophiecat
