I want to change the collar of the Hot Patterns Princess Shirt into a collar on a band which buttons at the neck, because for some reason the original collar points slmost touch the arm hole of the blouse - very 70's and not a good look for me. I chose the collar on a band as I thought this would be an easier alteration than drafting a new convertible collar.

I lined up the centre fronts on both the princess blouse and a very old McCalls (whose collar fits) but when I match the shoulder seams the McCalls is two inches longer in the shoulder. I don't know if this is a result of the change of collar style or whether I have approached the alteration in the wrong way. I have no alteration books (they are on order but not shipped yet) so I would really appreciate any help anyone could give me. This blouse was my second wadder in a row and both patterns had been flat measured within an inch of their lives so I am feeling very discouraged.

Did you compare the pattern pieces or the garment pieces? the difference in length could be due to the shaping of the neckline curve. TO get a better idea of where the differences are, compare the pattern pieces. See if you can just trim the HP pattern neckline to match the other one.

Re: What kind of tracing paper do you use? (posted on 6/29/06 10:43 AM ET)
If this was discussed before I somehow missed it . I was interested in knowing what kind of tracing paper is your favorite. I had purchased some dressmaker's professional carbon paper at one of Sandra Betzina's shows but now I am running low. When I checked with her web site she no longer carries it. Wish I could could find something comparable to it.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Lorna

Thanks for wading in to help me. I compared the pattern pieces not the garments. Though the McCalls has one piece and the HP has two because it has a shoulder princess seam; I only compared one bit of the HP, the part with the collar on it.

The McCalls extends two inches further out past the end of the shoulder seam on the Hot Pattern at what would be the neckline if the Hot Pattern had a front neckline curve (it has a convertible collar so there is a v or a gap where the collar lays back - does that make sense?). Maybe a convertible collar sit further back from the neck at the point where your neck joins your shoulder than a traditional shirt collar? Might that explain the extra length there? If so, I might be on the right lines with the collar after all.

Thanks again for your help.

Jenni

Hey, SalSews, that's fine. My first post I replied to a three year old message!!! I can't help you with the carbon paper thing but I use two sorts of tracing media. I get Burda Tissue Paper for the first draft of my pattern tracing and then I use FabriBaste, which is actually a machine embroidery stabiliser, available on rolls, for the final version once I get the pattern how I want it.

I hope that helps a bit. Afraid I am in the UK so can't help with stockists, but I would imagine that anywhere that stocks Burda patterns could help with the tissue (five huge sheets in one pack) and I would guess most decent weight stabilisers would work.

Jenni, I am wading right along with you ... collar changes are still a bit dodgy for me too! Let's hope somebody else wades in with us who can answer a bit better. Any chance at some photos of the pattern pieces?

Salsews, there was a thread the other day about tracing paper. You can find it by going to search boards option at the top of the page ...
