When the pattern has the phrase "3/8 inch seam allowance" printed on the piece-does that mean you need to allow for the seam when cutting or that the seam is already accounted for in the pattern? I have read the directions front to back 87 times and cannot find the answer to this question.

The seam allowance is included. Normally seam allowances are 5/8" so you might want to write a note on the instructions to remind yourself that this pattern (or a specific piece) is only 3/8".

I recently encountered a pattern where the sas were mixed and the 3/8" were marked and the rest were 5/8".
I often sew a lot of BWOF where there are no sas and I add the width that I want, ie 3/8" at neck, or enclosed seams, and wider at the side seams for fitting, and I clip mark the top and bottom of the seam so that I remember what I cut!
